56 Autocar tests Bugatti Veyron Super Sport

Cover for Autocar tests Bugatti Veyron Super Sport

At last a UK magazine has got its hands on the Bugatti Veyron Supersports - the worlds fastest car.

For their 5000th road test, Autocar chose the Bugatti and fair choice it was too. On a windy day, presumably at Millbrook, the Veyron turned in record times.

0-60 mph in 2.6 seconds. 0-100 in 5.0, 0-150 in 10.2, 0-200 - 22.2 and 0-220 mph in 31.1 seconds.

Also the fastest lap time on the dry handling circuit at 1 minute 8.5 seconds.

It was a cold day, so probably this accounted for a relatively poor 0-60 time, but the top end figures are quite amazing!

The standing quarter took 10.1 seconds and the standing KM 18.0 seconds at 183.4 MPH.

Autocar gave it 4.5 stars calling it a triumph of over-engineering but a bit clinical.

Having said all this, the Bugatti is not that much faster than the fastest bike of the moment - the mighty S1000RR.

In' this months Performance Bikes mag, it clocked 150 MPH in 10.75 seconds! - so only 0.55 seconds separates these machines, admittedly on different days and tracks up to 150 MPH. A fine result for a 13 grand super bike and once again proving that for bangs for your buck, two wheels wins!

I don’t share secrets with anybody, but because it’s no longer in production, I will let you all on a secret.

The concept behind this car is this little insect

An absolutely SEMINAL moment in British motoring history. Autocar did the buisness AGAIN. I mean LOOK at those metrics? They are STILL powerfully mean TODAY. The Bugatti Veyron is growing on me rapidly. The Chiron got way too much attention.

Yeah... stick with zx10r 2011. its a beast and cost about the price a Bugatti Rim.. Plus dude, Ferrari, RUF what ever you push it against, it comes victories and I have raced many and seeing their big bubble heads bust afterwards, its priceless

In heavy traffic, of the "real" world.. The bike will always easily win.... I'm sure it will use less gas doing it also..

For the car vs bike debate: Cars are for rich people that care about luxury and safety. Bikes are for poor people that want to look cool, but can't afford a simple honda civic. It just so happens that the lack of safety and luxury (it's just an engine on wheels) on a motorcycle adds to their performance.

The bike might be faster sometimes, the car might be faster. I have an s1000rr and it has launch control and TC, wheelie control and a quick shifter, all standard on the bike. So getting perfect pull is not too tough. Just pop the clutch in launch control. The Veyron is an amazing car, but what the article says is that if you want bang for your buck, the bike is a LOT cheaper and u get close to the acceleration of the veyron. Just enjoy these fantastic machines for the purpose they where built for : SPEED!

Interesting thing Bugatti claimed 15 sec 0-300 kph, but in fact it needs around 17-18 sec, time which was claimed for ordinary Veyron 17.3 sec. So that is this Super Sport? Anyway lets compare 0-180mph times
Veyron 1001hp 19.1 s
Veyron SS 16.2 s
Kawasaki ZX-10R 2011 190hp 17.2 s
So if you really wanna go fast you need bravery instead of 2 million euro.

An SR-71 wouldn't be street legal. It's far too wide, loud, and gets horrible mpg. It would never pass emissions. :)

So if someone was to take an SR71 Balckbird, and put wheels on it, they could claim many records. But who could own such a machine, except only the worlds' very richest? In like manner, that makes the Veyron only an engineering excercise, but of no real value to mankind. It's just an oddity, a bauble, a toy for the upper crust elite. No worship here.

@GriN
Actually, the Veyron would still be ahead at 426 meters (where the bike hits 250mph) because it was faster before that (so the bike has to catch up in meters first) and after that it's faster too. And don't forget the conditions weren't good for the Veyron (heavy crosswinds) and the time an average over 2 directions (crosswinds from 1 direction are still a handicap then as you benefit from them shorter than the time they obstruct you in the other direction). There is no doubt in my mind the SS can do even better as even the standard Veyron was timed to do the 0-150mph sprint in 10.4 seconds and has done the 1/4 quite a bit faster.

From Motorrad magazine BMW S1000RR

Top speed: 305 км/h 0–100 km/h 3,1 sec / 43 m 0–200 km/h 6,9 sec / 209 m 0–250 km/h 10,4 sec / 426 m 0–280 km/h 14,8 sec / 750 m 0-300 km/h 19,1 sec / 1112 m

Amazing perfomance for 16000 euro!!
From 0 to 250 no any chance for any prodaction car/

VW Veyron SS  14y ago

10.1 1/4 mile? Who was driving the car 500lbs Bigshow? The SS is a 9 second car and unless the track and weather conditions were horrible, they seriously need to fire their driver and hire the ones who got a 2.6 0-60 and 10.7 1/4 mile out of a 911 Turbo S PDK.

User avatar

Apathy  14y ago

I have NEVER seen autocar drive a car to its potential.

Their tests are always pathetic to watch.

This, of course, is just my opinion. ;)

User avatar

w0o0dy  14y ago

@fastestlaps: ok but here it is not even close to that at 10,1sec and the 0-190mph time also quite a bit slower than the factory 0-300km/h claim... 15,9 it certainly didn't do in the Autocar-test.... far from it even. Dubieus test or dubieus claim?

the fastest accelerating vehicle on the earth it will be always a machine ( if we could call it YET) with minimum 3 tyres..it's physic..take a look this: world record for a 1/4 mile pass is 4.428 seconds by 4 wheels top fuel and 0 to 320 mph (510 km/h) in under 5 seconds and from 0–100 km/h in 0.9 seconds.

I need to respond to Fastest laps here because I dont wholly agree...
"a Veyron will beat most superbikes to 180 MPH with ease"- not a BMW S1000RR it wont. Not with a top rider on it in any case, Sorry. I can only compare like for like and this months PB mag test is in Bruntingthorpe UK and the BMWS1000RR is quoted as being past 180 MPH 18.5 seconds after take off. The standard Veyron tested by EVO at BRUNTINGTHORPE in 2009 against a Nissan GTR, needed 19.1 seconds to hit 180 MPH. This is not a drag strip remember, but a neutral venue!

Even at the VW test track, for the 2007 Supercar race they held, the 0-186 time for the Veyron at 18.2 seconds isnt exactly much faster than the bike. After that the bike hits the limiter anyway and the Bug is, well gone!

The SS tested by Autocar was tested in a heavy cross wind which may account for the slower top end times. The Bugatti Quarter mile time of 9.7 secs is probably an optimum time on a sticky circuit!

You can buy Autocar for £5.99, but to save you the bother, here are the main figures.

0-30:1.4
0-60: 2.6
0-70: 3.1
0-100: 5.0
0-130: 7.6
0-150: 10.2
0-170: 13.7
0-180: 16.2
0-190: 19.4
0-200: 22.2
0-220: 31.1

Track temp was just 6 degrees celsius, which perhaps explains the slightly slow standing quarter time.

Whatever, bike and car are amazing machines!
