23 Formula 1 gets the promised "4 to 5 second" speed increase

Cover for Formula 1 gets the promised "4 to 5 second" speed increase

Chinese GP qualifying results are in and FIA regulation changes seem to have worked - we did get the promised 4 to 5 second speed increase per lap.

Compared to last year, Mercedes were approximately 3.7 seconds quicker (1:31.68 vs 1:35.4) and Sebastian Vettel was 4.44 seconds faster in his Ferrari (1:31.81 vs 1:36.25).

We didn't see nearly as much difference two weeks ago in Melbourne, but that didn't surprise me, as Albert Park is a street circuit without many high speed corners.

For Chinese GP qualifying laptimes, see Shanghai International Circuit.

A Finn finally flies again! Congrats to Bottas. Force India is a force. Thems the brakes for RB again. Speed is up again and a Canuck finally finishes a race.

If you take number of racing drivers per country and divide by population of that country, I think Finland has no competition!

A Finn is fine too..

Hulkenberg. Don't make Nico angry...you wouldn't like him when he's angry. Keke Rosberg has such a ring to it.

Raikonen is another awesome one, Think it's finish, Or swedish or something

Clearly Finnish. Swedes don't drink as much vodka.

The best ones are Finnish and usually end with "*nnen"

Bottas struggled all race. If Verstappen didn't have his brake failure he might have split the Mercedes and Ferraris. Excellent drive by vettel.

Viva Tifosi! Great race for 1st and 4th in constructors. 2nd and 3rd place look to be runaways. Renault can't be blamed for RB brakes. Hulkenberg did an amazing job with what he had.

Yep Bahrain should be a blast!

Just watched the race. We didn't learn anything new - Ferrari and Mercedes are neck-and-neck. That we already knew from first race. Looks like a fun season ahead.

Many don't know FL is actually Egidijus Dapsas of driving fame...jk. Seriously your phone store tech should be able to tell you how to turn off those notifications for next race.

Fcuk Google! The omnipresent big brother (or mother?) constantly collecting info about your every move... and then deciding to ruin your sport event on Sunday.

Oh they sent you the result. Sorry that's Google for ya.

Glad I didn't say who won. You just knew Verstapen would be an overtaking monster this race. But where he finished in the top 5?

User avatar

Fastedee  3m ago

Great the speed is up. Hopefully Stroll can finish top 10 in the next race.

What a race! The best three drives were top three. Still woulda liked Force India or Toro Roso to crack the top six in the name of parity. Ferrari,Mercedes and Toro Roso seem to have less driver parity than Renault,Force India and RB. Raikonen is aging and Bottas needs a little more experience. Verstapen is already a prodigy.

Damn Google Now just sent me Android notification about race result, before I downloaded and watched it :D

Do the cars really need to go faster?

User avatar

FastestLaps  3m ago

Yes :)

saxy  3m ago

I believe they do. I mean there's 2 aspects of F1. The racing, and the sheer technology/speed.

By downsizing the engines they have already gotten a lot of heat. It's like the road supercars Ferrari 488 or the base 911s. If you are going to quieter smaller turbo engines, at least make it a performance surplus, or why switch? As road cars have gone like so much faster than they could than 15 years ago. It makes no sense that F1 cars keep slowing down

Most importantly, last years pole would have qualified basically dead last this year. Tmrs race is on a be good
