Pagani Huayra tops official Top Gear chart

So Top Gear tested the brand new Pagani Huayra in their premiere episode of the new series.

Naturally they did the Top Gear power lap thing and, lo and behold, we now have a new track record.

Surprised?

I knew this car would do very well on any track, due to it's terrific power to weight ratio, ultra-stiff chassis and fancy aerodynamics.

I did not expect it to beat Atom 500, but I did think it would post a time very close to that of Bugatti Veyron Super Sport - after all, they did say in the review that Huayra has a better power to weight ratio, and, being lighter and more nimble, why would it not beat the big Bugatti?

And it did! It even beat Areal Atom V8 laptime by amazing 1.3 seconds, which placed it on top of the power lap board in Top Gear studio.

What most of the Top Gear audience didn't know is that Huayras time is not actually the fastest. In fact there are two road legal cars that have recorded faster times around Dunsfold circuit - Caparo T1 and Ultima GTR 720.

The Caparo was timed on TopGear but later dismissed for not being "street legal enough", because, according to Clarkson, it is "too low to go over speed humps".

Ultima have done testing at Dunsfold by themselves, and, despite much effort of proving it with video footage, have never been recognized by TopGear.

It's Top Gear. It's hardly a factual show. I like the show for the entertainment factor, but I wouldn't take those lap-times seriously.
However, I would believe a lap-time comparison if it was Fifth Gear.

Im sure LOADS will be brought into the spotlight of Paganis latest ideal, Its been hitting the internet lke a storm, and more questiones will be asked, question is, will Paganis answer? or more correctly answer honestly? Specially on all the questions that have been asked.

On Chris Harris, I used him as an example to all, also, Dunno bout you guy, but if im a littled pickled (Drunk) i can barely walk let alone type a perfect article.
But as such with the time, i think it should be removed unless theres no indication that its "Really" not legit.

Harris video from geneva, min 2:16, new Bespoke rear Pzero Corsa for the P1.
No marking on it. Tires under development so NO homologation marking on it.
This is one the reason why Harris lost credibility.
His article was 99% technically bull****.
Going back Back to Pagani and Top gear. Shame on both.

They probably don't even care, if they're anything like Ferrari, who just ignored the whole Harris thing until it blew over

In Pagani-TOPGEAR case there is a clear evidence. This is cheat. No way.
About Harris, we are still waiting for same clear evidence Talking about tires. Why Pagani did not ask to Pirelli a PZERO molded with super-soft-compounds like those that are sticking to dyno-rollers and with all homologation marking on it so not spottable by anyone ?
Harris was drunk when wrote the famous article because it was not the 430 scuderia but the 599 GTB that was using Pirelli Pzero.
http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/evocarreviews/205671/ferrari_599_gtb_fiorano.html
So Why Pagani is so stupid ? His tire supplier is the same partner of crime of Ferrari?
The answer is so simple.
These magic tires don't exist
1) You can not change rubber composite compound to make any kind of production tire to make it softer and stickier because shoulder, sidewall and bead of the tire are not designed to work with lower rubber hardness. The results will be almost devastating
2) More there is a legal issue. Tires manufacturer can not mould tires that have difference specifications compared to homologation values and markings. Any accident and/or injuries, you appear in court instantly also during magazine test on the road or in the track.

I'm not saying they don't know; I'm saying they likely aren't aware of the sheer amount of damning evidence against them. They probably don't even care, if they're anything like Ferrari, who just ignored the whole Harris thing until it blew over. Oddly enough, Lamborghini and Porsche issued statements related to the article, saying they'd never do something so dishonest, but I don't think Ferrari ever uttered a word, and told those on their payroll to keep quiet about it as well.

Yeah, I've heard of the track pack as well, but I don't think it'll come with hand-cut Zonda R racing slicks...

The "track pack" has nothing to do with claiming that hand cut slicks are street tires.

265/645-19 tires are not street tires. They are slicks. END OF STORY.

Pagani's claim in their response would only fool a blind person. Trofeos are legal. The tires used for the TG lap are not Trofeos. It's that simple. Some people will believe Pagani if they don't look at the evidence.

Hell if im just some guy and i know the accusations on them, they sure as hell do to.

They also used larger front tyres as well, Something like this should damn sure get there attention, We should here more on this subject in magazines and programmes. Theres also this "Track Pack" im hearing about, new bigger stickier tyres, a splitter, gear ratios, i havent had a chance to fully look into that yet though.

Bull. Shite. It's far beyond mere rumor and hearsay now; the only thing not making it a 100% full-on fact is an official admission of guilt on Pagani's part, which we'll never get.

Plus, according to what's on the Teamspeed forum, one of the members actually contacted Pagani and got a response saying that they used PZero Corsas, and made no mention of Trofeos. So now we've got inconsistent explanations to add to the list of strikes.

Note that Pagani still doesn't explain why the tires pictured in the photos are larger than what they themselves say the Huayra comes with, why they aren't labeled with any kind of model name(Corsa, Trofeo), why they use size designations ONLY used on racing slicks, and why there are racing slick tire wear indicator dots on the lap tires.

I don't think Pagani actually knows the full details of the accusations; they just know they're being accused of cheating and came up with some broad, all-encompassing press release to explain away everything at once.

Response from Pagani as per 6Speed:

Pagani:

Yes, we have heard these rumors around our Record Lap at TopGear. We used Pirelli PZero Trofeos. As first equipment we offer to our customers three different types of tires, all of them omologated for street use: Pirelli PZero, Pirelli PZero Corsa and Pirelli Pzero Trofeo.

Pirelli PZero Trofeo can be treated as Michelin Pilot Sport Cup for example.

In comparison to the times we have done at other tracks, We can say that we are still faster than the time we scored. From our calculations we are even 1.5/2 seconds faster than what we have done.

Pirelli is our partner since 2007 when we set the Record time at the Nuerburgring Nordschleife with a Zonda F, and we are developers with them regarding Pirelli PZero range of tires.

@ lamboboy

To back up CoolShirt, they LOOK LIKE but actually aren't. Cool mentioned the wear indicator dots and size which are exactly as they would be from slicks.

The slicks were "moddified" to resemble street tires and Pagani tried to call them "street tires". They aren't.

Even if Pirelli was secretly working on a special street tire, they can't call them street tires that were first slicks.

@lamboboy
That's by design. They may look like P-Zero Corsas, but they aren't. Though it's not really apparent in the photo here, zoomed version of the same picture show tiny dots poked into the tire in distinct patterns. These are tire wear indicator dots that are ONLY used for racing slicks. Plus, photos of the front tires show the tires themselves aren't branded with any specific name, they've only got "Pirelli" on the side; no Corsa, no Trofeo.

That, and the size designationWhich not only shows that the tires are in a size Pagani themselves says the Huayra DOES NOT come with(Pagani says the Huayra's front tires ONLY come in 255s; but the lap tires were 265s), but the particular nomenclature used for the size is, as per info on Pirelli's own website, ONLY used for their racing slicks, NOT for road tires, Corsa or otherwise.

Still though, I dont know why Top Gear would allow that, i know its stage and we rea; car people dont listen to them, but you would think there would be some truthfull credibility in atleast the laps to some level.

But, since Pagani did this, i wonder if some other companys would do the same? Or if Top Gears staff even cares?

Im sure on an episode of Tope Gear given how much this subject has been brought up, thta they will atleast talk about it, atleast i hope they do.

@NIN Arent those tyres on the Huayra in your picture, P-zero Corsas? Sure look like them.

@lamboboy
Which makes the fact that they DID cheat all the more shameful. They didn't NEED to do it at all. Like I said, Top Gear already gave the car the "Hypercar of the Year" award, and most every journalist who's gotten their hands on it has proclaimed it the best thing since the McLaren F1.

Really, this whole thing is just facepalm-worthy.
No matter if they cheat or not, its just not possible to NOT love the Huayra.

@BR2
Nothing to really be curious about; Pagani wanted THE fastest time on the leaderboard, and was willing to cheat to get it. Top Gear is the world's best-selling automotive magazine, as well as the most-watched automotive TV program(maybe one of the most-watched programs period). Getting a good "review" from them is the best kind of free publicity a manufacturer can ask for, and the Huayra has already gotten "Hypercar of the Year 2012". What better way to cap it off than by being not only the best car around, but the fastest as well?

Read the posts in that Teamspeed forum that uncovered this whole thing; there's almost nothing that DOESN'T point to Pagani cheating. As for the impact it'll have on their image...About the same as when Ferrari was ousted by Chris Harris; pretty much nothing. Ferrari is still Ferrari, and they can do no wrong. And when this all blows over and fades into history, Pagani will still be Pagani: a company that can do no wrong in the eyes of all but the most jaded and skeptical of us Gearheads.

..Im curious as to why they would use a different set of non stock tyres for the lap.

Then stat they are an option, Then Gloot about it at this year Geneva MotorShow with 1:13.8 written on there Huayra on the Pagani Stand.

If Cheating is true, i wonder what kind of effect it will have on Paganis reputation.

They aren't being honest. The "street" Trofeos are not the same as the hand cut slicks that were used for the lap.

The tread patterns don't even look the same.

Here's the street legal Trofeo

here are the tires used on the TG lap...

Even if they will make a set of hand cut slicks for customers, they aren't street legal.

It seems, Pagani States that the Tyres that were used on the Top Gear Lap, The Pirelli P Zero Tropheos are available as an option on the car, Can anyone else confirm that?..

a slicks tire is about 0.8-1/s/4 every km.

dunsfold ~ 2.82 km

Ultima GTR is about 2.9/s a lap slower with road tires than with slicks. If you cut a slicks tires it is about 1.5 /s faster than a normal road sport tire as the Pirelli or Michelin.

Why i can not find a video of the lap?

@ CoolShirtGuy: I don't believe half of what is said on Top Gear anyway, I watch it because it's funny and car based. Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond, and James May are he Three Stooges of car show hosts.

I knew Ferrari couldn't be the only manufacturer out there rigging their magazine tests and such. And just like with Ferrari, it's sad to see Pagani stoop this low. It's not like they NEED to do this; their cars stand on their own merits just fine. How many reviewers have jizzed their pants over the 458 Italia? How many times has the Huayra been called one of the best cars ever made, if not THE best? It's not like they're underdogs with something to prove; they're already at the top of the pile, and they don't have to go out of their way to prove they belong there.

IMO, all this crap just cheapens their cars. It says that they don't have any confidence in their own products. For shame, Pagani, for shame. And of course Top Gear would allow it. You think they'd risk being "blacklisted" by Pagani? Besides, since when did Top Gear have any journalistic integrity anyway?
