22 Renault Clio RS laps Smolensk Ring, Peugeot RCZ humiliates Audi TT

Cover for Renault Clio RS laps Smolensk Ring, Peugeot RCZ humiliates Audi TT

The Clio RS may be a hot-hatch for day to day use, but it does have some specific features. While in the city, I had problems with overly "sharp" brakes and lack of torque at low rpm, on track, however, everything changes. Gearshifting is available on 7500 rpm, shift light and zoom help not to miss the right moment.

Brake pedal, surprisingly, gets hard, but not because of overheating. 4-piston Brembos are very stable. They just need more effort to get necessary levels of deceleration. Brake pedal feedback is wonderful - you definitely feel the threshold after which ABS is activated.

Steering is clear enough, with good feedback and pleasant resistance. These are 2 main advantages of Clio RS - brakes and steering.

By the way, Clio RS seems to be the last one with non-turbo engine among B-class hot-hatches - Corsa OPC, as you know, is equipped with 1.6T, MINI as well. VW family (Polo, Fabia, Ibiza and probably Audi S1) have 1.4 turbo/compressor. Ford Fiesta's gone.

Our conclusion: Clio RS is one of the best hot-hatches for those, who are just starting to participate in track days.

Clio's laptime: 1:57.4

When the new Fabia RS and Ibiza Cupra will be available for tests (more likely in October) their lap times could be compared with Clio RS.

By the way, this summer we ("Za Rulem" magazine) started cooperation with another new track - Nizhegorodskoe Ring (NRING).

Since Peugeot RCZ sales just started at that time, we decided to test 156 hp coupe with its direct rival - Audi TT. Unfortunately it was impossible to compare cars with reasonably close engine performance levels - Audi TT Roadster had 2.0 TFSI with 200 hp output as well as AWD drivetrain and DSG.

Despite that, we got astonishing results: being almost 50 hp more powerful, Audi TT was actually 0.02 seconds slower than RCZ! The reason must be combination of extra rigidity of coupe bodied RCZ, lesser weight and mechanical gearbox, which is preferable on a track while breaking.

Audi's best lap was 2:06.96, Peugeot showed 2:06.94.

""Maybe, Ferrarifan, but FWD TT, has lots of understeer too. ""

bwahahaha... TT has very good weight proportions. It's drive a lot better than others FWD cars...

This is a load of nonsense, and of course is being grabbed by the 'boys' who spend their lives reading accelleration times in Top Gear.
So the Peugot has set a time 0.02 seconds faster than the Audi. Well wouldn't that be really useful if you bought your car for racing round the Nurburgring! The fact is nobody does by a car like this for that. We buy them to go work, do a bit of shopping at the weekend and maybe go for a nice drive in the countryside, where falt out around corners will gain you no trophies. You buy the one that you fancy, and I'm sure the Peugot is a great car (apart from the roof looking like a bum, but I'd be interested to know whether it will stay screwed together with no rattles after a few years - past experience would say no. The Audi however....

the peugeot is just the cheapest design theft i've recently seen... unbelievable!
and... it looks definitely a good deal less nice.

Maybe, Ferrarifan, but FWD TT, has lots of understeer too.

the FWD version TT 2.0t would have done much better. much lighter and more agile.

Audi owned. Overprized shit. Peugeot wins with less power, less prize, more style, and more ride quality.

Good morning!

Have you ever seen a racetrack?

Do you realise that lap time is not the same as acceleration?

N.B. Both cars were driven by the same professional pilot.

bgt  15y ago

bullshit

TT 0-100 km/h 6.7 seconds
RCZ 0-100 km/h 7.8 seconds

tt was drive bad driver.

Make the most of the Clio RS as its likely to be the last naturally aspirated hot hatch ever, which is a pity. I drove an early 197 several years ago and it didnt feel like it had the full 200 horses. My standard 208 BHP Impreza, which weighed the same by the way felt miles stronger! As you say, lack of torque, certainly revs into the limiter nicely however.

French makers are really brilliant making compact sport cars from long time ago. Renaul 8 Gordini, Alpine, R5 Turbo in several versions, R11 Turbo, Peugeot 205 GTX, GTi, RAllye, 206 GTi or RC, 207 GTi, 309 GTi or GTi 16 valves, 306, Citroen Visa Gti, AX GT and GTi, Xsara VTS, Saxo VTS, ZX 16 valves, Clio Williams, the impresive Megane and Clio RS... a long tradition making best compact cars in every age. If you enjoy driving fast in curves, you need a little french sport car.

Peugeot is present in many motosport categories as rally of wrc or simply the le mans series... Peugeot is a good brand of nice cars but also has their own trash cars like sporty coupes or hatsbacks that run like hell...

shame for audi

roadster vs coupe is not fair

Wads  15y ago

Its a good result but I wonder what second hand value the Pug will have after 3 years?.... ;-)

P.S. sent you email about a problem adding lap times.... it doesn\'t work any more.....

User avatar

Wads, blame me for the title - it was my idea :D

I think it is reasonably appropriate because Audi did have serious power advantage. RCZ is Peugeot\'s first attempt at this segment (in a long time, if not ever) and who would expect a 155 Peugeot to win 200 AWD DSG Audi. Even if it\'s a convertible.

At least I wouldn\'t.

Just to get more attention???..... I must remember for my next article to use \"Wads crashes Bugatti Veyron!\" as the headline ;-)

It\'s just a title, that should attract more attention :)

Details and conclusions are in the article.

I don\'t think beating the heavier & slower roadster TT by 0.02 seconds qualifies as a humiliation! That suggests that the TT Coupe would be faster.....

No, RCZ isn\'t a roadster - it\'s a coupe.
We\'d like to compare equal cars with similar bodies, but Audi representatives had only 200 hp TT Roadster, while Peugeot - 156 hp coupe.
By that faster lap of RCZ was a real surprise.
