8 Track-only McLaren P1 GTR sets new Anglesey lap record

Cover for Track-only McLaren P1 GTR sets new Anglesey lap record

McLaren P1 GTR set a new Anglesey Coastal " track record. Of sorts.

P1 GTR, track-only modification of P1 with EVO''s Jethro Bovingdon behind the wheel, set a laptime of 1 minute and 8.7 seconds, running on full slick tyres, and beat the street legal record, held by Radical RXC Turbo, by 1.8 seconds. It was also 2.5 seconds faster than regular, street-legal P1 on Trofeo R tyres.

Not too bad, considering that a car like this with 1000 horsepower would really shine only on fast tracks, rather than tighter tracks with short straights.

It is not sure what kind if any kind of record this is, since all competition in FastestLaps.com is street legal cars. As for race-cars, I don't know if this is the fastest time around Anglesey Coastal or even close to it. I suspect a GT3 car could beat P1 GTR on a track like this. But certainly not somewhere with long straightaways like Monza or even Nurburgring,.

Jethro did a great comparison of a Morgan Aero with a V8 Vantage S. I believe they got 1:27 and 1:22. respectively at this same track.
They'd beat the McLaren home though lol. Even if you had the Smokey and the Bandit. truck transporting it.

The point of this eludes me as you can't drive it to the track. It's easy to make a non street legal car fast. Even a street legal car can be made fast fairly easily if it has a horrible ride, scrapes on speed bumps and has no practicality(Lookin right at you M4 GTS)
The 570 gt is much cheaper, still insanely fast , and you can drive it home in comfort from the track.
Even so called non track GT cars like the DBS are more than fast enough to scare and excite normal people who pay 45 £ to drive one on a track in England. You get an instructor as well. Only some tracks have a Ferrari 360 or DBS. Many only have DB9s and V8 Vantages.

Agreed with saxy.
There is a far more large gap, in performance, between the P1 LM and the P1 GTR than the one there is between P1 GTR and regular P1.
P1 LM is lighter, more powerful (increased turbo pressure to mantain the 1000 ps output on standard fuel) and it has 40% more downforce than the P1 GTR. Not to mention that aero and chassis balance of the 5 P1 LMs are carried over by an actual motorsport team (Lanzante), while, as far as road-legal P1 GTRs go, Lanzante only converts them for McLaren, but doesn't touch them by a mechanical and performance point of view.

This gap in performance between the LM and the GTR is confirmed by the fact that, this year at Goodwood, the P1 LM prototype run the short and tight track even slightly faster than the F1 GTR LT race car of 1997 with the same driver (both were driven by Kenny Brack). P1 GTR would be quite slower than that.

Might as well be a race car if you can't drive it on the road.

I've always maintained that if you want to be in a hunkered down road illegal race car and are looking to really drive it, just get a race car. One of those Can Am Mclarens and it will destroy this car on every track in the world aside from Le mans. GT3 cars are restricted to 500hp, The Can Am runs at like 650hp, so it must be insane.

but I understand it's not a serious racer. This is a multimillion still not road legal, using road illegal slicks and it's 1.8s faster than a road legal RXC with worn out road legal tires. I suspect, add new slicks on the Radical and it would beat this car on this track.

I never got the hype for this car. The modifications are meh... only 10% more downforce. Weight is only 70kg lighter. Compare that to the modifications Pagani did with the Zonda R. I mean Mclaren did more to the 675lt than it did with the P1 GTR.
