3 Yamaha's failing 2016 season

Cover for Yamaha's failing 2016 season

After last year when Yamaha won manufacturers championship early in Philip Island, and Marc Marquez spent more time riding track marshall's scooters than his Honda GP bike, it seemed like 2016 season will be more of the same plain sailing and in-fighting for the #99 and #46.

However, this season fortunes changed - it was Yamaha riders making non-finishes and strategic errors (Rossi refusing to pit in Sachsenring), and Marquez scoring points every race - even in Le Mans where he crashed and rejoined to finish 13th.

Net result of this is easy rider's championship win for Marquez and prolonged battle for manufacturers title.

With Dani Pedrosa's crash and broken collar bone in Motegi, Yamaha may very well hold on to the manufacturers title and salvage what was otherwise a season of missed opportunities.

Opportunities can't be taken for granted - they come and go. In 2015 and 2016 Yamaha had the fastest bike, but 2017 may shake up the status quo completely, with new regulations (no more wings on bikes) and the orange Austrian motorcycle giant KTM joining the GP class.
