Here in Croatia these german cars are most beloved and remembered and stand as symbols ever since late communism era:
-Absolutely No.1
Merc W123 / W124 series
as luxury sedan
-No.2
VW Golf Mk.I and Mk.II diesel
as reliable, simple and frugal compact car
-No.3
BMW 3-series E30 is the synonim for "Crna Bembura" (black BMW) in Croatia,
now that's something special,"by driving that you proved to be a bit mad, tough, furious, risktaker etc, these cars were more than anyone could handle in the wet,but that just added to their "living on the very edge" image, they looked "mafia" in black and they were fast with straght sixes and had a beautiful howl, those cars had everything + much more you needed to prove you were a real alpha male."
That's not what I think of that car, but I think I made a good illustration of what "black BMW" meant in our countries.Still, much less today really.
Sorry I'm wasting so much comment space, but this needed to be told,it's even offtopic a bit,Alpina B10 V8S...

The symbolic meaning of chornij bumer (black BMW) means nothing in GB. But we (Inline 6 rules, me, LJUTICA, Bart etc.) we know all about it :D
-Very true - I must agree. And also very good observing capacity there FastestLaps!
I didn't noticed that until now, I always thought that that phenomenon is at least Euro-wide, not only in ex-communism coutries.
Yet,maybe there is some of it also in Germany.
I drive a BMW,my father also, but to us it's always been a car of choice 'cause of it's practical and rational values like excellent reliability and quality + you get good driving characteristics and subtle sportiness and a tiny bit of that masculine image.
Very important fact is:
German vehicles and products have always been very apreciated and beloved in ex-Yugoslavian countries,it's still like that today,it's fixed in our way of thinking. That has been conditioned partially because a lot of people from Yugoslavia used to work in West Germany back in the days, and to those people that generated great impressions,Mercs (at most!) and other german cars were uncomparable to local Zastavas,Yugos and "prestige" from USSR (our communist "friends") imported Ladas.
We rarely got the chance to drive capitalistic cars.
It might also be an phenomenon wider spread than I think, about that I'm not sure.
One thing is certain,to all of these countries brands like Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Audi, VW,etc. have a special place in hither people's minds.

Today's capitalism is not implemented correctly and is unfair, but communism, oh my God! Anyone who supports communism is mad. And has never really witnessed communism in action.
P.S. Let's not get too much off topic once again :D

FastestLaps is right! Soviet occupation and communism have ruined ALL Eastern Bloc European countries. Some so-called leftist "intellectual" in the western world say that communism is the perfect ideology, but they are wrong! We Eastern-europeans know communism, and it was a horror. And after communism it's even worse (people still don't have free-mind, the "elit" is the same that it was in the communism, etc.). Believe us, don't want communism.

Crazy differences country to country.
Yes. Because GB was never under soviet occupation. Lots of things are different there.

The same in Hungary. Three years ago a (probably drunken) BMW driver almost killed me when I walked on the pavement and an E32 BMW 7-er used the pavement in order take over some cars.

in Poland is stereotype that basically all most all BMW drivers are insane. They braking all possible rules and laws during everyday driving. Even if their BMW has weaker engine than yours they have to take you over its weird :-)
I understand you completely. It's 100% the same here. BMW drivers don't have just bad reputation. They are hated by society. When a bad accident has happened and one of the cars involved is a BMW, people don't feel sorry for that guy they even feel glad that something bad happened to the BMW driver and the reaction often is something like "Oh at least it's one BMW less on the streets!".
This has nothing to do with the car but rather the stereotypical BMW owner. There are two types:
Type 1 BMW driver: A young lad who just got drivers licence and bought an E36 and drivers like mad.
Type 2 BMW driver: A gangster who bought brand new 5-series -> 6-series -> 7-series - > X5, X6 in black with blacked out windows. He bought BMW because the mafia etiquette dictates that he must have a black BMW.
The reason why both types chose BMW is not a mystery - type 1 because it's the only cheap used rear wheel drive car that allows for flamboyant style of driving (remember - there are no saxos and novas in Eastern and North-Eastern Europe, it's all BMWs for neds) and the type 2 because BMW is really, despite everything, a prestige brand, very masculine brand.

Guys I have to ask about one detail don't you think that most of BMW owners are jerks? I'm asking cause in Poland is stereotype that basicaly all most all BMW drivers are insane. They braking all possible rules and laws during everyday driving. Even if their BMW has weaker engine than yours they have to take you over its weird :-) I know that this is rather matter of driver than car which you using but from my point of view I have to only confirm, peopole who driving BMW are mostly arogant and iresponsilbe idiots!
