That gear setup looks super expensive. I wonder how that much mass would effect efficiency.
I\'ve seen so many engines toasted by timing belts that I cant imagine a single good reason to use them. I\'ve got a nissan with nearly 200k miles still rocking the original chain with new tensioners.

I swear timing belts were used in order to ruin engines so you end up buying a new car. Thats the only reason I can think of why car makers would use a belt rather than a proper chain.
There is another way of transferring crankshaft motion to camshafts - by use of multiple gears.
Take this marvelous V10 TDi as an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfuNppz1GVc (at 3:00)
But I don't quite understand how it works out because as far as I can imagine, it takes just one broken teeth on one gear to throw off the timing. And those gears probably need some oil too.

Fuel pump belt snapped yesterday while driving. At first I was thinking it was a lot more trouble. I was actually fearing for worst - the dreaded cambelt failure.
Luckily, pump belt breakage is harmless.
I am replacing cambet as soon as possible :D
P.S Why they bothered using those hateful deteriorating rubber belts and not proper chains? Especially for low RPM diesel applications.

Oh yeah, it sounds awesome!
Below 2k it sounds more like a truck or VW LT van. Above 2k you can hear a faint turbo whine and as the engine opens up to 3k and more you can really hear the characteristic Audi Quattro & Dodge Viper-esque straight five roar. I would say that the audio experience is even better than on higher revving petrol R5.

more power, more torque, and 6th gear.
It has more peak torque but we do not know what sort of torque both engines produce at 1500 rpm and below.

@FastestLaps
It isn\'t multivalve, it also has 2 valves/cylinder.

The 4th and 5th gears are long. Under 60 km/h in 4th gear and under 80 km/h in 5th gear it\'s begging to shift down.
I thought your car does lower rpm than 1500 at 90 km/h because your car has bigger engine, more power, more torque, and 6th gear.

I am envious of your fuel economy. I wish that either my Ford or my Jaguar got even close to that kind of mileage out of a gallon.
Feel free to buy Jetta TDi! :D

Not sure if they would be considered short but they are not as long as on the w124 260e for sure. But I consider that a good thing.
Your Focus has more modern diesel with multi valves (I assume), advanced common rail injection and a turbo that probably spools up at lower rpm.
The AEL TDi is a little more old-school. She likes to rev too :D

@FastestLaps
That much? Are the gears short? My family has a 2003 Ford Focus 1.8 TDCi (100 PS, 5 speed manual gearbox) and it does 1600 rpm at 90 km/h in 5th gear.
FastestLaps 15y ago
~ 1800 rpm.
when I am driving it I hardly ever rev it much past 2k. I am sluggish econo-driver. :D

@FastestLaps
How much is the rpm at 90 km/h in sixth gear? I guess it\'s around 1200-1300 rpm.

So far I have traveled 423 kilometers in this car and filled up twice for 10 lvl (~13 liters). That's a total of 25.93 l. It works out I have averaged fuel consumption of 6.1 l/100 km (46.3 mpg UK / 38.6 mpg US). In combined cycle (50% of time city driving (with occasional traffic jam) and 50% of time highway).
The owner's manual states 4.4 liters (64.2 mpg UK / 53.4 mpg US) highway (@90 km/h) and now, when I have calculated my own consumption, I believe it's 100% true!
I think it's remarkable for a reasonably sized car like this and with nearly 300 k on the clock. And that's 14 year old technology!
Honestly, I don't understand why petrol engines are still made. They have no fundamental advantages. None.

Great! Can you reveal the source of these specs? If it\'s a magazine test, maybe you can email me some scans. I am interested because I bought this car couple days ago, just curious what magazines had to say about it back in the day.
