Oops, I meant '65.

@ Mental & Viking: I agree, I do believe modern cars are heavier for their size, they're about 300-500 LBS heavier than 10 year old versions of the same models. And Viking's estimation of the '65 Impala's top speed sounds pretty accurate, 145 MPH sounds about right.

"Modern cars seem to be heavier for their size."

And that's because modern cars are overfilled with all that electronic stuff.

This Impala is nice dinosaurish car, which is really pretty light for its 5.4 meter long. Hopefully there is Chrysler's Challenger still with us, which seems to me as a successor to the classic Challengers/Impalas.

@Super8 yeah, actually it could probably reach 145 mph. I got the 137 mph from that website: http://www.automobile-catalog.com/ it is a good site, but sometimes they could be off a bit on the coefficient of drag in my opinion. They do have a pretty good calculation program for estimates, very close to actual tests.

According to some source, it's enough to run into 145 mph.

With a 3.76 inch stroke the safe rev limit is 6750 with forged rods, and stiff valve springs. If you rev an unmodified 396 to 7400 rpm you will throw a rod. Great engine, just trying to give the best info on it that I have. Big fast car, if the aerodynamics were better it could reach 165 mph with a 3.31 rear axle, but with the standard coefficient of drag it will only reach 137 mph. I like the styling of these big two door cars, and it is surprising how roomy and large a car manages to only weigh around 4000 lbs. Modern cars seem to be heavier for their size.

I have always loved the '69 Impala SS 396, I'm fascinated by big, heavy cars that are also fast, they seem to defy physics. Plus, this car looks magnificent.

Same deal as Bel Air. A 7400 rpm modified 396 from Corvette are fitted here and very-very rare. Only available in 1965.
