My 2002 SVT Focus had a 2 liter F.I. twin cam that put out 170hp @ 7,000rpm. Imagine what that would have done in the 300+ lb lighter Vega!

Vega Cosworth competition

I bet if the emission equipment was removed and the engined tuned for stronger performance rather than the smog emissions of the day, I'm sure there would be a few horses to bet had.

@ Mental : agree with you , the Cosworth usually means Performance , but in this case , its some different .
The Cosworth-Vega came with cast aluminum wheels , Wider radial tires ,anti-roll bars front and rear, specific gear ratios for the four-speed, free-flow exhaust system, quick steering .Alas, The Cosworth engine didn't make the Vega into a BMW 2002 or Alfa Romeo GTV beater .

Holy imps, and that's modified by the Cosworth! Don't even want to imagine what it was basic! Though, yeah, I know, 110 hp was more than enough for a little sportscar, but for this car it looks so not enough, whether it's Cosworth. Didn't know Cosworth was cooperating with GM. But I see it's quite lightweight, so is it maybe a good handling?
From the side and back this car looks good enough, but the front... did it ram the guardrail?..

Was originally meant to be ~180 hp but emissions regulations tightened eventually strangling it down to 110 hp. Not bad for the time out of a 4 cyl but not great either.

70s and 80s was when stricter emissions standards were introduced worldwide and engines were first equipped with things like catalytic converters. Naturally, the performance hit was initially very high.
