A twin-turbodiesel V10 derived from the Ford Modular or Volvo Modular family would have worked better to accommodate for the S-Type's steel frame. It was a heavier car and poorer handler than both the aluminum XJR and the original XJR.

S-Type R competition

Clearly you have never driven an XJR and/or an STR. The STR was the better handling one, by far. The XJ, even the R version was always meant to be a luxury car first.

FUN FACT: No S-Type Rs ever actually made 390-400 hp. It was just a marketing ploy made by Jaguar to compete in the M5/E55 crowd. The fastest ones did around 13.8-14.0sec in the 1/4-mile at around 102mph average. The most powerful ones made around 330-360 hp at the crank. Not one acceleration test showed that the STR could rev to 6100 rpm, it was more like 5250-5500 rpm.
What was "supposed" to be an E39 M5 and W210/W211 E55 AMG rival, was really an E60 545i and W211 E500 Mk1 rival

You are referring to the pre facelift. The facelift had more power. Also in 1st and 2nd gears it shifts but in all other gears it revs to redline.

Fun fact: you're wrong. There are plenty of dyno runs where the STR makes 400 hp. It's still not gonna be THAT fast because it's heavy, but ffs it's the same drivetrain as in the XKR / XJR and those make 400 hp aswell.
Some of the cars do short-shift in 1st, which is kind of a mystery as to why they do that, but some owners have reported being able to fix that with various tricks and get it to rev until redline.
What it was or wasn't supposed to be is an interesting question. It was obviously never as good a driver's car as the E39 M5, but it's much more refined. As for the E55, if you're talking the NA version, the STR will smoke that. The supercharged ones, well...obviously you're gonna get more power from 5.5 liters than 4.2 if both are getting blowed.

Hmm just looked it up, gotta correct myself here, "smoking" the NA E55 AMG is probably an overstatement, those two are kind of level. No surprise the E55 is lighter and still has more displacement. Regardless saying the STR is an E500 rival is a ridiculous statement...
