Awesome W124, this 5-cyl sounded less diesel than most of today diesels, even on idle. I even think it had no rev limiter (that's how durable it has been) if I recall correct,it simply goes into around 5000rpm and physics don't let the engine rev higher so it stops revving any higher.I've heard it for real,it sounds ferocious for a diesel at those rpms. Now I now diesel fuel is burning much slower than petrol, but I'm not sure that's the only explanation why diesel engines cannot rev more than 5000rpm on regular fuel.

Something is wrong here! Between 1985 and 1989 the 250 D had 66kw/90PS, between 1989 and 1993 it had 69kw/94PS.

Legendary Mercedes 5 cylinder OM602 diesel. One of the most durable engines in automotive history. Known to go 1000000 miles+. And that sound of old-school diesel clatter at idle and 5-cylinder growl on throttle is just brilliant!
