Wow! This is arguably the real E34 M5 competitor and not the 500E sedan. Both straight-6, track-focused sedans. And yes, you could technically order a sedan-style two-door car as it was common back in the days. (I'm sure they made some four-door ones on the side.)

500E was more like Hartge H5 (and to some degree, Alpina B10) competitor.

The 4-door-edness is critically important. If it ain't got 4 doors, its not a competitor for M5, IMO.

By the way, isn't this just a gorgeous looking car? Monoblock wheels are perfect design match too.

Well, technically, there was no M6 or even 6 Series in the '90s. The 8 Series was a competitor with the S-Class Coupe (aka the CL-Class).

Comparing this to an M5 of the time would be like comparing a Mustang V6 to a Audi RS5. Even a 540i is faster than the E36

540i would be good race. Overall this car obviously is much more laid back than M5 and was not meant to be any kind of racing inspired thing.

It would be more reliable for sure, but definitely no competition for the big hitters of those days. Even an Audi S4 (name before the S6) would take it on quite well. And obviously face less rust issues. The 124 was never meant for good power output. And that's fine.
