@ Mental: CoolShirtGuy is right, you can put a scope on an SKS and hunt deer and wild boar with it, or give it a Tapco polymer stock and convert it to take AK47 magazines and use it for home defense. They're cheap, reliable, (as long as you don't get a cheap Chinese knockoff like I made the mistake of getting), rugged, versatile and accurate, and 7.62X39 MM Soviet ammo is very cheap and easy to come by. You can buy one here for around $350.00, there is actually a high demand in America for cheap, reliable Soviet rifles like SKSs and AKs, especially when an AR15 costs around $1,200-$1,500.

@Mental
I think the SKS is popular because it's cheap, versatile, accurate and rugged. Not as reliable as an AK-47, but it'll last longer than, say, an M1 in the hands of a neglectful owner. As for the 7.62x39mm round, it's not that hard to get around here, since AK-47s are so popular. Hell, in my neck of the woods, it's been harder to find .22LR ammo than 7.62x39.

But there are plenty of better alternatives, like the M1 and M14, some of which are even cheaper than the SKS and are chambered in more "mainstream" rounds, like the .308.

@Shaggy
Really? Simonov carbine is popular in the USA? That's interesting, but weird... What was the demand of this communist's weapon in States, since own M1 carbine on paper looks as a better alternative? And wasn't it problematic to get 7.62×39 mm cartridge? The only advantage of the SKS I see is incredible reliability.

User avatar

Shaggy  12y ago

@ Mental: The Steyr AUG is an excellent rifle, and it can converted for left handed shooters, like me. BTW, the SKS is a very popular gun in America, as well as demilitarized AK47s. The only guns illegal in the US are sawed-off shotguns.

Well, since you are talking about firearms, I also want to join the discussion.

IMO, the best among infantry firearms of WW2 period was the Bren machine gun. It combined just almost anything the ideal gun should have: precise shooting, mighty killing power, long fire distance, rapid rate of fire; 30-bullet magazine. And not less important - it is not too heavy. All that makes it an universal infantry weapon by WW2 standarts. One of few problems was its reliability, but still. Of course, I tell all that just confirming to books and video games, since the only weapon I had an experience with is a pneumatic Walter CP99, since the most of firearms is illegal here, and the rest of legal is very hard to get.

Haa ha, Viking, I kind of envy you. I respect Steyr AUG rifle very much. Despite it is pretty old already, I still consider it one of the best sturm rifle. And you had an experience with one of them... Nice. And did you have an experience with Makarov pistol and SKS rifle? Haha, that's interesting. Where did you get them in USA, and what was the demand, whether there were much better West analogues?

User avatar

Shaggy  12y ago

@ Viking: You're right, this is a car site, after all, passion for cars and guns are pretty much the same, but I find you can talk more freely talk about cars without freaking people out. ;)

User avatar

Shaggy  12y ago

@ Viking: The gill remind me of a deep water shark like a six gill.

User avatar

Viking  12y ago

Of course since we are on a Morris Garages car page, I probably should say something about this groovy MG. It looks like a Mako shark on the prowl, but it has enough performance to back up the styling. I really am more of a car enthusiast than a weapons enthusiast, although I kinda like swords. :)

@BR2+ LOL I kinda wish I didn't know all this stuff. As I said, I am not really a firearms enthusiast. Unfortunately I can't forget all the stuff I did for a living. And please don't ask about "nukes", I know so much it sometimes keeps me up at nights. An unfortunate by-product of living, and working in the Washington D.C. area. Fortunately I have re-located, and changed careers. Now I am in the fine wine industry (as a wine tour guide), and I can actually talk about my job without being arrested. :) In any case, I am ambivalent about firearms, but I still own one (only one now), and support the responsible ownership of these (somewhat dangerous) tools as a hedge against totalitarianship. Way too much info, but I have been drinking a lot of Cabernet Sauvignon tonight. My wine purchases are now tax deductible since I am a wine professional. :)

@Shaggy
Yeah, it might not be an appropriate topic for FastestLaps; but I have lots of experience with firearms. Some of them have been kinda exotic: Steyr Aug 5.56 mm bullpup assault rifle, Dragon wire guided rocket launcher, 8 gauge shotgun, 60 mm mortar, etc. Other firearms are more mundane: Remington 12 gauge shotgun, AK-47 with both 30 round magazine and 75 round drum, M16 A1 and A2, SAW, SKS, 45 cal semi-auto model 1911, lots of 9mm semi-auto pistols (Glock, Taurus, Sig Sauer, etc.), Smith and Wesson 38 cal model 64 revolver, plenty of AR15 variants, 3030, 30 ott6, .380 Makarov and PPK, the list goes on. I am not really a firearms enthusiast, but I have lots of experience and I believe in the second amendment of the U.S. Constitution. I did after all swear to uphold the entirety of the Constitution a few times. Okay back to cool cars. :)

@ Shaggy: I always wanted to have Magnum Research BFR with .45-70 and Colt 1873 Single Action Army but modified it to accept .454 Casull.

User avatar

Shaggy  12y ago

@ Super8 @ Viking: Wow, you know weapons, too, I'm impressed. My 3 main dream guns: Smith @ Wesson SW1911 TA E Series .45ACP, Winchester Model 1300 Coastal Marine Defender 12 Ga, and FN SCAR 17 CQC 7.62X51 MM NATO.
My current favorite in my collection is my Smith & Wesson Enhanced Sigma SW9VE 9MM, fits my hands like a glove. I've done some skeet shooting a few years back with my church skeet league, I used an old pump action 20 Gauge Winchester model 120 Ranger, I hope I'll be able to go next year and use my 12 gauge Stoeger Coach double Defense. ;D

Viking  12y ago

All this talk of firearms is almost enough to give me flashbacks to some of my previous professions: Infantry Sergeant, and Special Police Officer.

I have used all kinds of firearms: machine guns, assault rifles, shotguns, pistols (semi auto, and revolver). Heavier weapons: fragmentation grenades, 60 mm mortar rounds, Dragon wire guided 90 mm anti-tank rocket launcher, etc.
My current favorite is my little Walter PPK (James Bond style) pistol, even though it is kinda small for my hand and the slide sometimes catches my skin. :)

Super8  12y ago

I think I'll use Thompson M1928 with Drum Magazine, S&W Model 27 and maybe Springfield M1903A4.

User avatar

Shaggy  12y ago

@ Mental: I like to use the MG42 in Call of Duty, a very devastating weapon, the PPSH 41 is pretty good, too, but my favorite is the Colt 1911 A1. ;)

Mental  12y ago

This car is just insanely sick! I watched the discussion at SRT Viper page about "overdstyling", and I can definitely tell the style of this MG is incredibly overdone. That massive spoiler, that aggressive bodykit and those vulgar gills - all that look ridiculous on a car with Morris Garages badge! As a result, the car looks just overriced and certainly not beautiful in any sense... But still, I respect this car. Because it's so brutal, so untypical for MG! And in addition to its extraordinary design, the beast has a serious X-power V8 aggregate. And all that power sent via manual tranny to RWD, which makes it a British muscle car! What other car combines all that? Nothing comes close to this "machine gun" built at "clothes factory".

You either love this car, or hate it. In my occasion, I hate the design, but I love the fact this damn cool thing actually existed.

Shame, there was no successor to this ridiculously awesome MG... Maybe now we could see a Camaro ZL1 MG-fighter.. :D

Unfortunately, modern MGs are just boring Chinese crap cars... Nothing left from the original British Morris Garages...

BTW, I hate MG-42... since I played 'Call of Duty'.. LOL

User avatar

Shaggy  12y ago

@ Viking & Fangio Man: Morris Garages, I knew that. ;)

User avatar

Shaggy  12y ago

@ Super8: I know of the MG42, I'm also a gun enthusiast, and that's one of my favorite machine guns. ;D

User avatar

Shaggy  12y ago

@ Fangio Man: Hey, I did good for someone who can only say a few words in German, I think after I master Spanish, I might take up German, or Russian. ;D

User avatar

Fangio Man  12y ago

@Viking
As a car enthusiast you should had know that MG does not stand for "Morris Garages".

;D XD

User avatar

Viking  12y ago

Ja, das ist sehr gut! LOL

Of course I was clearly mistaken in thinking that MG stood for Morris Garages. :)
