This VW in the UK is HUGELY expensive, My original guess at 40k was extremely underated.
...Its the SAME price a a Porshce 991 911 GT3!!!!!!!!!!!!£98,515...You have got to be kidding me...
At that Price, Im gettin a Bmw I8, Or a much lower price of the Tesla Model S P85.
I thought the price was gonna be higher then id pay for, But that is just ridiculous.

The price list for the XR1 is estimated at $70k. Yes, sounds too much for a VolksWagen. But if their promising performance fuel-economy number realize, the car would be bargain. That means the VW will successfully compete with Alfa 4C, Lotus Exige S, or even with the Cayman! I think the project will have the future.
Just one BUT. That's VolksWagen... I don't think too much people are willing about Volkwagen as their supercar... The situation similar to the Phaeton might repeat...
Piorun 12y ago
As to XR1 fuel economy goes along with sport performance. Mostly beceause of lightweight, modern transsmision, like 2 clutch, good areodynamics.
You can look at 800 kg weight to tell that many sports cars would be in deep shit if they bring about 200-300 hp engine to this car.
Alo centre of gravity is great and its mid engine.

The whole idea of this car is fuel economy. And this car initial price is too high to make any sense to buy it. You would to drive too much to give your money back from saved fuel even with the EU fuel price.
However the cheap verion of this car, would have much more sense.
IF they would go down in price to about 20.000 Euros, even car would be little heavier, and fuel consuption little higher i can see many people consider of getting one of theese

Was not impressed with the XL1? Then you might be seeing this:
It is called XR1. And it is potential VWs ultra-lightweight mid-engined sportscar. And by the way, the most fuel-efficient. Sounds impressive, is not it?
XR1 looks pretty much like the XL1, so you might think it is the same super-clever hybrid. But not. It will ditch the electric engine, and the little diesel would be taken off in favour of 2.0 turbocharged engine from the Golf GTI. And so with the super-lightweight construction, claimed to be below 900 kg, and perfect aerodynamics, this thing might perform pretty much serious. Volkswagen claims the acceleration to 100 in less than 4.5 seconds And astonishing top speed of.. 300 kph +... 8O
VW, please, let it hit the market.

Reminds me of the VW Nardo W12.
Maybe they thought a Hybrid would be more succesful than a supercar and put a hybrid engine in it.

@BR2
What similarities does this car have with the DeLorean I can see:
Both have doors opening to the top; both have the frame at the side window; both are mid engined; the front a bit associates to DeLorean's; XL1 is painted silver, so it's like the stainless steel DeLorean; and just the charm - they both get you shocked (though DeLorean mostly because of its beauty).
And Insight/Prius or whatever else such ordinary are just worthless in comparison to the XL1. Even closing eyes at its impressive tech, its appearance will a make everybody shocked anywhere, at fashionable streets of London, or in dusty Kenya. And if VW planned to produce only 50 units, then in addition it would a Very little chance to see it. Though I suppose by 2020 the car of the same construction will be much numerously produced.

@ Georg
yes, but for the moment PLANNED are 50 car's. Later may be more or less.
Georg 12y ago
Jag there are currently no words published how many they will build... and for what price they will sell it... all speculations... Autobild guess the price to be 40,000Euro (including 19% tax)
Real price and real production numbers are a secret till VW prensent it officel at the Geneva Autoshow next week

.....What simularitys does a DeLorean have with this exactly?..
And who in there right mind would even spend close to 70k on this?(Has price even been announced?)
The wheels and the front look like that for simple aerodynamic purposes only, maybe even weight and the technonigical purposes, covered wheels and wheel arches are good for aerodynamics.
I dont see this car getting anymore attetion then a 1st Generation Honda InSight. Thas almost what it is, just more of whats up to todays standards, and the interior looks surprisinly bad for an this type of hybrid/electric car, most i now have pretty goog looking interiors. But they had to keep weight down so.

Nooo.. this is Anyhow a Prius, yet at least. Prius looks like nothing in comparison to this "Volks Wagen of the Future". Firstly, Prius looks boooring and anyhow remarkable, it doesn't take any record, or even close to that, the Ordinary all the way. But nowadays, XL1 is something special. It's architecture is horrifying, to be honest: covered wheels and those rims are hideous, the front end looks strange and the rear is just awful. But still it's Unique and can't be left without any attention (and something common with the DeLorean can be noticed), Prius has nothing to do with that. Take XL1 to the simple road, and guaranteed everybody will be shocked, guessing that's an UFO. Here is mainly the reason why people will afford it - to be extraordinary, people love that. And then, XL1 uses impressive tech and that allows to set amazing results.
I'm sure there will lots of people wanting to spent even $70k for such a thing. Though, when it get an ordinary sight 20 years later, I think I'll have to hate it the same as Prius nowadays. :D
BR2' 12y ago
Really?
If thats the case, I only see people buying them for 2 reasons, 1: ButterFly Doors, 2 Mpg, But, it doesnt look like it will have a cheap price either, Most likely around £40,000, id guess, Eco nuts will go crazy, But im not completely sold yet.
Mental 12y ago
Now this is Gullwing! LOL
I mostly hate such type of cars but this one is EXTRAORDINARY!
Looks like this car comes from science-fiction books, but it is real! And it takes some records! Firstly, it the most fuel-efficient road-legal car in the world today. It takes only 0.9 liter/100km. It's capable of doing 50 kilometers on an E-power. So GreenPeace and economists are going to be happy.
Then, it weights only 800 kg, thanks to using carbon fiber and other lightweight materials. The power from the tiny diesel engine situated at the middle comes through the DCT gearbox to rear wheels, which sounds amazing! And the drag coefficient - 0.189! Unbelievable!
The tech is impressive. The performance wouldn't shock but it can reach 160 kph, and accelerate to 100 in 12.7 sec.
The design: oohh... this quite ugly due to maximum aerodynamics, but that's Unique! It can not to take emotions!
Overall, the result is unbelievable. Nooo, this is not Prius... that's what we have to wait from the future. Though, I'm sure - nowadays it's gonna be waaay not cheap with all its advantages.
