I owed both of these cars in quick succession, and I found the Jag was much quicker than the M3 (in a straight line at least), so I'm surprised by the stats.

Only top-gear accelerations were quicker, it needed a supercharger to even match the power-to-weight ratio of the BMW, it still made 93PS/L while the BMW made 107PS/L. The BMW was more efficient at putting the power down to the ground and to the transmission as well, plus it used a manual (which benefits mechanical efficiency) and not an automatic.
The XKR was more like a 330i ZHP in straight-line performance and got wrecked by that one on the track too..
