One thing that is very noticeable about diesels is that they only work at low speeds (

I don't think that boring it to 4.0 alone would give 400 hp. And I don't know to what extent boring and "stroking" is possible for this particular engine design. But I know for certain that Inline 6 is suitable configuration for engines far bigger than 3 or 4 liters.
Anonymous 15y ago
Inline six engines have perfect primary and secondary mechanical balance. BMW should bore this 3 liters engine to 3.6-4.0 liters. This would mean 360-400 PS.

judging the top diesel model 740d currently have this engine don't expect any more power for the 535d or the 335d and bmw currently concerned about fuel consumption they wont be thinking of a 3rd turbo.

First of all there will be a 3 liter tri-turbo diesel coming from BMW, so you haven't seen it all from 3l.
And you should modify the engine type: inline six.

Sorry about my previous post,I'll support it with data from BMW's official german site:
http://www.bmw.de/de/de/newvehicles/7series/sedan/2008/allfacts/engine/technical_data.html
The weight is calculated from BMW's by reducing it by 75kg because 75kg are added to "simulate" 68kg of driver weight + 7 kg of luggage. So the result is 1875kg of so called "kerb" weight.
You can see in disclaimer on the site that all vehicle weight has 75kg addition. On german site when you access the link that I posted above,in lower right corner says "Hinweise zu den daten",just click that and it will open new JavaScript window that explains (in german) everything about data.

They don't have to! The amount of power this Inline 6 is said to be producing is way above the best that V8 diesels of few years ago could manage. Inline 6 configuration is famous for it's use in diesel engines, look at the large truck&bus engines - the really large diesels, most are Inline 6es.
i agree just imagine a diesel v8 335d with 30/40ps more just pointless it will ruin the fuel consumption + add more mass and im not sure about performance.

Fastestlaps! BMW doesn't want to produce V8 Diesel engines.

I knew very well that BMW produce Inline 6 as well. And I didn't put "V6 Twin Turbo" as engine type for this car, but you did, gt. I referred to it in my comment above as "best V6" because I saw "V6 Twin Turbo" on the spec sheet and I wasn't 100% sure that new BMW diesels were still Inline and not V.

i knew its a dohc 4-valve/cyl turbodiesel I-6 i was the one who added the 335d 8 month ago...
it should be intresting to see an 2010 335d with this engine...

Fastestlaps! BMW doesn't want to produce V8 Diesel engines. Instead V8 BMW produce 3 liters, 306 PS twinturbo Inline 6 diesel.

CORRECT!
1.It's not a V6,BMW only makes straight sixes.
2.It's curb weight is (only!!!) 1875kg.
For sure! No gay sixes have ever come out of BMW factory!
What is your source of information about the curb weight? To be honest I have no idea of where did mister "gt" get the specifications from. In fact I never knew this engine option existed until now and I was about to write a comment about how BMW lacks a strong diesel in 7-series lineup now that Audi's got 350 hp V8 TDi.
Is it a press release that all the info originated from? If so where can I find it?

Wow! Never seen 300 hp + from a diesel 3.0 liter. This has to be the best V6 diesel to date.
