I think that 185 top speed is BS. And the only Charger that could do that was the NASCAR version which wasn't street legal

@BR2
With a nowadays "progress" I can't see a place for this car as a modern successor. Nowadays the Charger Daytona coupe would get a shorter body, the same weight (if not more), uncovered bi-headlights, no such wing, less displacement - the same Challenger. Though I so want a supercharged Challenger 392.

American classics I'd love to see again are: Pontiacs GTO/Firebird; a long Caddy twin-top; Ford - new GT, performance saloon and a rally-road car with Cosworth; Buick sleeper coupe; Lincoln Continental; a famous Shelby Cobra fully productioned.

@ Shaggy : Ask what?

User avatar

Super8  12y ago

@ Viking: According to some sites, it can reach 200 mph with 650 Hp. 185 mph @ 7000 rpm is max speed for racing slick and non underrated car which not available on road going model. With racing slick only, it can reach 170 mph and all standard model could reach 163-167 mph with 3.23 final. Non underrated version can be bought but usually for racing or drag race.

Now all we need is a modern interpretation of this car, the same with a Benz Evo II, damnit i wish they would just build the older cars in retro form!

The did great with the Challenger, bombed with the Charger, Looks great, awesome in fact, but it shouldnt have the Charger name, Dont get me started on the Dodge Dart....!@#$%^&*(_+)

Really cool cars. According to my best sources with a 426 Hemi and 3.23 axle ratio it was capable of 160 mph. Not bad for 350 net horsepower. The gross hp of 425 is actually rather conservative. Using the SAE gross standards it put out 425 at 5000, but as much as 470 gross at higher rpm. In any case, when using SAE net standards it is roughly 350 hp net. The coefficient of drag is about 0.29. I don't think it has much downforce, but the wing is necessary to eliminate the lift at the rear. When tuned by the NASCAR teams it could go over 200 mph, but I don't know how much horsepower they were getting (probably a lot).

Super8  13y ago

@ Shaggy: Yeah actually i don't add that max speed. With A833 4 speed manual 3.23 final it can reach 186 mph considering 433.5 Hp and 7000 rpm redline.

Shaggy  13y ago

I once watched a show where they compared muscle car engines, the 426 Hemi restored to origional specs registered 862 horsepower on the dyno.

User avatar

Shaggy  13y ago

No one made a 200 MPH road car until 1987, and that was Ferrari.

User avatar

Shaggy  13y ago

The racing versions can reach that speed, the street versions will do 145 MPH.

Super8  13y ago

In wikipedia, the Hemi in Charger Daytona and Road Runner Superbird actually had 433,5 hp @ 5000 rpm and 472 ft-lbs @ 4000 rpm. It comes from dynometer but it's unknown who tested it. It's only for 1969 model and 1970 model. After that, they downgrade it until 350 Hp

They are 3 prototype of this car. First one is driven by Buddy Baker in Chrysler Proving Ground. It reach 200 mph. It only fitted with small 4 bbl carburator and had 425 Hp Net and 5 speed transmission. Second car was driven by Charlie Glotzbach and hit 205 mph. It has same spec but the carburator is big. Third car was a racing car that will use in NASCAR. It has 620 Hp and 622 ft-lbs. It never driven and used in NASCAR. It rumored had a max speed @ 380 km/h (about 236 mph)

@ E : I got that data from wikipedia and that claimed from Dodge. But im still thinking and feel imposible just like what you said. I will delete it later.

The nose does not produce anywhere near 1200 lbs downforce. It's primitive with no ground effect and a horribly inefficient air dam instead of a splitter or canards. 1200 in front and 600 behind would also result in terrible balance. I don't buy 600 lbs at the rear either. The wing looks like it's at zero AoA, and to get to that Cd, it's probably not produce much downforce at all. The rear wing is just for stability.

And what doesn't have a better Cd than the Viper RT-10?

(Viper got 0.5 + but Daytona got 0.28).
6. On March 24, 1970, Buddy Baker reach world record speed of 200 mph in Talladega circuit and make it the fastest USA car that ever made. The only competitor for this car is Corvette ZL1 and Superbird. The car set a speed record that held for 13 years, to be broken by about 1 mph in 1983. (It still the fastest Dodge until today cuz Viper GTS only reach 190 mph and only SRT 10 with 600 Hp that only can beat this car).
7. Even this car got speed of 200 mph but it only have 3.23 standard rear axle which only make it run to 160 mph (All engine had same rear axle).
8. Plymouth Superbird is street version of this car (It will not overheating if drive below 55 mph) Plymouth claim it this car got lower speed than Daytona but the performance on the road is far ahead than Daytona.
9. Chrysler claimed this aero can keep the car still in ground even the speed over 350 km/h. They never test it but this might be the reason why in Forza 3 Charger Daytona can reach 380 km/h after full tune up and still handle well.
I got all the data from http://www.allpar.com/model/superbird.html

Some fact about this car :
1. Chrysler said the aero of this car will work well in 170 mph and work very well in 190 mph. But Charger Daytona with 440 Magnum can only reach 160 mph.
2. 440 Magnum version got rallye spedometer like other Charger. The spedo only give 150 mph but the car speed is 160 mph (How they know the speed is 160 mph while the spedo only show 150 mph?)
3. Like Challenger, Daytona also came with supercharger and other semi racing part that will boost the power up to 550 hp and make the car reach 205 mph. That option is not came from Dodge but it came from car tuner.
4. Dodge said, they make a little change on the engine to give some power. Strangely the Hp is still same like other Charger (378 magnum and 425 hemi)but the engine sound is different (Daytona feel more powerfull if you listen it). The Hp is Sae Gross and the Sae Net should be lower than that. The Hemi got 425 Hp for Sae gross and 330 to 360 hp for Sae Net. But my friend got unbelievable information. He said when he dyno 2 Daytona with 440 and Hemi (owned by collector) It show almost almost 400 hp for 440 and close to 450 hp for Hemi. He said, The was restorated but the owner still keep original engine and part in this car. It migh be the real output of this car is close to 500 hp for Hemi and close to 400 for 440 (i still can't believe this but that might be explanation for little change that Dodge make it).
5. Believe or not this car has better Drag coeficien than Viper R/T 10 (Viper

This is The fastest Charger in 69 era (and possible still the fastest Charger until now). It reach 200 mph in Talladega circuit only with small 4 bbl carburator. However there was a problem that can't be fixed by Dodge :
1. It will overheating if you drive too slowly (under 55 mph)
2. That tall spoiler always make everybody got problem when they park the car in small garage or underground parking space
