It's strange that curb weight is more than 1 ton. With regular 1.5l engine Samara's curb weight was around 900kg. I thought rotary engines were more compact and thus more lightweight than piston ones.

some 21099s and samaras which were intented to be police cars had this rotary engine, and of course they were FRONT wheel drive

they were on sale... Lada had many models (~8) with rotary engine in production and they had many different rotary engines (~20), read some time ago that Lada actually has produced more rotary engines than Mazda! The even made rotary aircraft and powerboat engines.
Their engine ranged from single to four rotor engines...poweroutput from 70hp to 270hp in production form and up to 350hp with experimental engines
