1984 RX-7 GSL-SE OWNER  4y ago

Yeah, this info is totally in accurate. 1. There was no GSL-SE in 1983. The GSL-SE was offered as the top trim level for the 1984-1985 model years, which was the first RX-7 to get the 13b rotary and a 4.11:1 axle ratio 2. The 1984-85 GSL-SE tipped the scales at 2375lbs. 3. I can confirm that my 1984 GSL-SE is gear ratio limited to around 130mph at redline in 5th gear.

It seems the author has conflated older 12a performance figures and 2nd gen weight info to make this quite slow and rotund mythical 1983 GSL-SE

Thank You for your first-hand information about this car.
According to the site automobile-catalog.com Mazda RX-7 GSL SE MY1984 was available in late 1983.
Magazine Car&Driver tested this car and several others at Willow Springs. 106 mph was their tested top speed on the track, not maximal speed overall. I accidentally put that number on the wrong place.
By the way best Willow Springs laptime was 1:49,08.
I've submitted this laptime earlier, but it was deleted for unknown reason.

Interesting - because In January 1984 I bought, on Consignment, from a Dealer, a "Used 1983 Mazda RX-7 with Aftermarket Arkay Turbo" - in Black! So - Maybe you missed one tiny detail in your understanding and analysis!

While I loved it, and the ability to hit motor maximum "Redline" in All 5 Speeds, and climb 2 mile long Steep Grades at 160 KPH was impressive, I could also drive the Canyon Roads, at their speed limit of 90 KPH, on Cruise, and get 30 MPG!

Yeah, I had my old RX-7 GSL totally stock up to 110 mph on a flat stretch of I-77 and had room to go if not for my fear of the cheap tiger paw tires I put on it. Maybe that 104 mph is on an oval track.

My 1983 GSL-SE with Aftermarket Arkay Turbo - on Stock Bridgestone's, was able to present 135 MPH on a Straight! or Cruise comfortably at 125 MPH on the Freeway! (But - EVERY Car on the Road in that case - Was a Potential Killer Crash, However - I was Young, and not so Bright!

Top speed seems 20 mph too low. Willow Springs time?
