What is astonishing is that the Honda Civic Type R is faster than the F40 at Suzuka by 1.3s

Put Michelin Cup2 tyres on the F40 to level the playing field and the F40 will be faster even though it's more than 30 years older...

Not exactly a performance tyre designed for optimum grip in the dry. The Cup2 would enable an improvement in lap time by at least 3 sec...

When was F40 raced here? Compared to 90s , modern Suzuka circuit has a bit faster snake curve , 130r ,less tighter chicane, Dunlop having a bit more run off, bump being removed somewhere and is slightly shorter compares to past. Track went a quite a bit of small tweaks overtime. So I doubt laptimes are comparable.

3 seconds? The difference between a Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S and a Cup 2 are probably already close to 3 seconds judging from other cars (and again between a Cup 2 and a Cup R). So exchanging an late '80s tire with a brand new Cup 2 should probably bring almost 10 seconds if everything still works well with the tire.
