29 airdrag... factory claims vs car magazine tested numbers..

because at the GT-R datasheet discussion ot factory claimed cd of 0.27 and sportauto clocked 0.31 on one of the most modern windtunnels in the world I thought it would be interesting to compare the sportauto results to manufactor claims..

Important... not cd is important.. the airdragindex is the important number... the combination of cd and the size of the vehicle.. the lower cd x A the better is the aerodynamic of a car...
a other sidenote... many "noseheavy" cars can become nearly weightblance neutral at higher speeds if the lift at the front axle is greater than it is at the rear

Georg, has Sportauto tested Mercedes SLK 200 Kompressor, Audi TT 2.0, VW Golf GTI, and VW Polo GTI?

a good way to see that adding huge wings and wild bodykits don´t improve the aerodynamic in any way..most likely the production vehicle has better aerodynamic...

compare of a Techart GTstreet and a stock Porsche 911 on which the Techart is based...

997 Turbo pre facelift

550x800m

the GTstreet has a bigger frontal surface area... a worse cd and more lift and less downforce than the stock Turbo... but looks like that the rear wing could produce tons of grip.. which it does NOT...

User avatar

since we're at that point-the air resistance which is produced by tire/wheel width which also affects aero.

Yes, it's true. For instance, the Corvette C6 has a cd of 0.29, while the Z06 has a 0.308, and the ZR1 has a 0.32. Both Z06 and ZR1 have a higher cd than the C6 because of their wider tires.:)

I am quite surprised with the results. I guess claims of GT-R having superior downforce to the turbo did not really end up being true.

notice that claims are mainly for the basic small engine models... widely unknown fact is that larger engines increase cd... because they need larger watercooler have worse air flow through the engine compartment etc.

Very true Georg, let me add one more thing since we're at that point-the air resistance which is produced by tire/wheel width which also affects aero.
OK guys, whoever needs proof of these theories just click on the link below and watch cw changing:check the 320i and than raising for 320d (because of radiator and intercoolers) and further raising much more for 335i or 335d (which both have wider tires than the rest and large cooling surfaces).

http://www.bmw.de/de/de/newvehicles/3series/coupe/2006/allfacts/engine_data.html

So, 320i is naturally aspirated and 320d turbocharged which adds it an intercooler and thus highers it's cw 0,27 to 0,28 (maybe the radiator is bigger too, I'm not sure).
But much bigger difference occurs at 335i and 335d with wider tires and a couple of intercoolers, both with cw 0.30.
Note that 330d also has big intercooler and similar engine as 335d,but it's tires are still significantly narrower which explains cw of 0,28.
