Before I could fully internalize the reality of 1000 horsepower production Corvette - the ZR1 revealed last year, Chevrolet are back at it, and seemingly out of nowhere, have presented even more powerful version of the C8 Corvette - the ZR1X.
ZR1X combines twin turbo "LT7" V8 and rear wheel drive of ZR1 with electric motors and front wheel drive from Corvette E-Ray. What we get is 1250 combined horsepower, "GM estimated" 0-60 mph in "under 2 seconds" and 1/4 mile in "under 9 seconds" with 150 mph trap speed.
These figures are curiously similar to Ferrari F80 and McLaren W1, particularly the all wheel drive Ferrari. It is clear that Chevrolet want to position ZR1X at the highest echelon of high performance cars, a category commonly called "hypercars", which also typically implies hybrid drive.
It seems like 2025 "hypercar trinity" is different from 10 years ago in that Porsche has been replaced by Chevrolet - who would have thought!
Porsche is lacking direct rivals for both versions of ZR1 and it would be expected for the upcoming 992 Turbo refresh or possible 992 GT2 to target "regular" ZR1, while some hypothetical Porsche hypercar will likely match the ZR1X, perhaps beating it and beating the highbrow rivals from Ferrari and McLaren, given that Porsche will have at least a year or two extra to design such a hypercar and benchmark performance against its rivals.
