27 FastestLaps V2 whishlist

Well, w0o0dy wanted a brainstorming thread - here it is!

What do you want to see in fastestlaps v2? What changes, what new features?

Despite the fact that this will be a v2, some features will actually be removed from current version. Vehicle spec sheets will probably become less detailed, initially there will be no sorted lists page, no fl-rank and gimmicks like that. And it won't be possible for unregistered users to post comments (at least initially). Unregistered users for sure won't be able to post laptimes or vehicles.

I want v2 to be more laptime oriented. To eliminate the long backlog and inefficient laptime approval process.

Race car laptimes, driver pages, motorcycle pages, what do You want to see included in v2?

More importantly, do You have any possible solutions for biggest issues that have always undermined fastestlaps v1 and will probably linger in v2:

1.) How do you define a car/bike model
2.) How do you prove a laptime is legit

I think we should get rid of all the clutter that's on this page. Many of these insignificant track packages (especially those that don't make more than 5-10 PS more and/or weigh more than 50 kg less than the standard model) should have their data be transferred and their pages deleted.

In the GT350R vs GT350 case, it's quite significant and therefore acceptable for GT350R to have a separate page because it's lighter by 100 lbs and also much quicker in a quartermile.

In the ZL1 1LE vs ZL1, SS 1LE vs SS, GT500 CFTP vs GT500, and GT PP2 vs GT cases, they should not have separate pages. The only things making them faster on most road courses are the tire choices. Same thing with the "1320" Scat Pack versus standard model, and all these pointless "Widebody" additions that aren't any faster.

It's all as pointless as adding Weissach Pack and Z07 pages for RS and Z06 Corvettes, when their straight-line performance results are equal.

All MY2015-2017 Viper versions should have just one page. A name change doesn't mean a thing to me, an ACR is still a T/A with a bigger wing, longer splitter and slightly different tires. There are many luxury SUVs that have 19" wheels as standard but come with 21s and 23s in optional packages, but no one adds them as separate pages. Why? Because they are pointless to add.

The Huracan Performante and STO, plus Aventador SV and SVJ as well as 488 Pista and 600LT/765LT each have different tire choices, but we don't choose to separate them, so why separate ZL1 "1LE" from ZL1 "0LE"? Or Stingray Z51 from Stingray Not-Z51?

@Fastestlaps
Is there any chance to make all acceleration figures blue, i.e. making accessible to all tests and sources not only for 100/200 kph and 60/100 mph?

I have an idea: it would be great having a car-design list on this site. Only registered users would be able to vote for any car on FastestLaps. But in difference from "The best looking cars." there would be general opinion shown as average arithmetic number on every car page. I suggest to create a five-mark scale and then a computer would calculate the best looking cars and the worst too and show them.

I think we should make it so that only cars that have been or are highly likely to be tested should remain in the site; I know that'll exclude tons of normal and old cars, but well, it's called fastestlaps for a reason no?

@ Fastestlaps: try to add a race car and try to compare it to the standard version so we can know how far that car can be modified or is it better than the standard version or not. Also try to compare between old race car and modern standard car or race so we can know for the old race car can beat modern standard car

LOL! so agree

I've got an idea, we should have a special area of the site called the corvette/gtr rage page, where people can rant all day long about how much a racing seat/steering wheel weighs or how the gtr is basically a video game on wheels without it being posted to the home page :D

I'm out of ideas, I'll think of some later, and sorry to go a bit (kinda) offtopic but I think it'll be good if the picture of the car could be moderated to ensure that it's a quality picture, good angle, decent resolution and preferably from the front, no parking lot pictures for example, unless there's no other ones available.

I thought of this because I came across a site that has a decent database of car pictures in good quality and I thought it'll be useful (boldire.com) and also well, for the future aesthetics of the site haha

I would rather keep info on the other laptimes rather than discard everything but the fastest. Just speaking from a data analysis stand point, the average is more useful than the maximum or minimum. There are many variables that are hard to account for when it comes to lap times, and that's why I don't like keeping only "personal bests".

I'd actually like to see lap time break downs for individual drivers, etc, because it gives me more information to use to come to a conclusion, however I'm not the one managing the data on the site, and I'm sure plenty of people want an answer to "which is faster" as quickly as possible.

I totally agree with the voting system ,also if an EVO (bedford laptime) is published in the mag for example, but there are no scans yet (old laptime or new) i think the user should add it,if its proven false in the future it should be removed.
Also laptimes from car forums etc should be added, asking the car owner for mods etc of course.
I think only the fastest laptimes should be added from a trackday/test session, and only from a pro driver, but if the laptime of an amateur is good enough, voting will decide if should be added or not,

What about...

Any laptime for any vehicle in any track can be added as long as it is backed up by a registered trusted source (Autobild, TopGear, FIA F1, SuperMega Track Day Event)...

Only few of these laptimes would be actually connected to a carpage, because most would have modified cars (or bikes) or track cars that can't be defined as a car model.

Then any user would vote for new laptime entries and give any laptime a rating of "incorrect", "correct but insignificant" or "correct and significant". Laptimes with high incorrectness would automatically be removed and laptimes with high insignificance would not be shown in track pages etc.

Because one could submit literally each laptime from one drivers training session with same car and that alone would flood track page with insignificant laptimes that nobody wants to see.

Users would be able to change their opinion on any previously added laptime at any time. For instance - when an improved laptime for driver X and vehicle Y comes in, one would be able to mark this driver's and vehicles previous best time as "insignificant" as it no longer would be a personal best for that car.

Want to hear your thoughts on this....

I think the slower lap times of magazine tests should continue to exist. Factory tests or claims while usually quicker, are not as useful as comparisons from the same driver or magazine. I agree that the emphasis should be on lap times. Having race car and bike lap times is fine, as long as it doesn't make too much work for the moderators.

I support race cars/non legal cars. I also highly support multiple lap times for the same car. Perhaps instead of showing the fastest lap, we should show the average lap and the number of laps recorded. However, I'd also be OK with displaying the fastest lap as long as the other laps are stored somewhere.

All laptime sources should be easily visible, as they were originally.

I'd like to see an expansion of the car comparison function. More than 2 cars at a time, and it would be nice to launch a comparison from a specific car page. Example, on Zonda F page there is a link "Compare Zonda F" which takes you to the compare form with the first car already filled out (Zonda F).

Defining a car: Perhaps collapse all cars into one page by model name, so basically Corvette C6 would include the base car, Z06, ZR1, Z06 Carbon, Z09000 special version X, etc. When comparing laptimes, people could check on/off which models to include. Example, on the Corvette C6 page, you would have Corvette, Corvette Grand Sport, Z06, and ZR1 laptimes. Users could unselect everything except the ZR1, and the page would only display ZR1 times. This would mean we would only need to create a minimum of car pages. If/when new models come out, we simply attach that information to the laptime and it's automatically sorted.

To restore all the older members back would be great.
And to return this site in the format similar what it was 3 years ago.
And fix the comparison, compare lap times and acceleration times separately (optional) and remove wet times in them, also the stupid power to weight ratio in comparos.
Much laptimes on here are not legit and need removing, and a lot of older laptimes should be added, that exist but are not on FL.com.Source for confirming a laptime could be a link from an car forum (affordable) and magazine scans.
Liels paldies.

Nice things to add if possible would be:
1. a 1/4 mile drag race comparison/simulator.
2. Users have the ability to select their own Dream Garage (max 10 cars) that other members can view via the users profile.

Wads  12y ago

Agree on only registered users being able to post stuff..... in the early days allowing anyone to post helped make the site/content grow quickly.

The only downside to only allowing members to add stuff is that theres more chance that laptimes won't be added because somebody hasn't already added the car..... several times i've found a laptime but the car didn't exist and I didn't have time to add the car details myself.

I'd vote to keep the good data in the car pages and dump the less interesting facts.

Keep articles, reviews etc.

What would help me as an admin would be a weekly email reminder of any backlog waiting for approval. Although I don't post as much as I did previously I do still visit most days and approve new stuff when I have spare time.

Results by the same driver would be cool too.

User avatar

Here's some idea's (I realize some may be too ambitious).
Searching for cars with comparable power, weight, power/weight and using the result for a comparison..
Filters for engine-layout, driven wheels to search for "competitors".
Comparing cars based on a near identical laptime on one track...

Of course I would like to see more correct info in V2, and I think Member voting on which cars/stats should or should not be deleted would be a good idea. Probably over 1000 of the cars on this site have some kind of mistake in their data.

As far as bikes, I think it would be cool, but would also be very complicated, as bikes change every model year, and there aren't a whole lot of laptimes for motorcycles.

Race cars would be good, although would require a separate category of course. And almost all the famous race cars ever made would be added within a week i'm sure.

I agree with Phavyarden that there are many members that have been here for awhile that can be trusted, and should be able to update data.

Anyway, good luck with the V2 build, I'll be interested to see how it turns out!

Completly agree with Inline 6.

1)I would like to have better accounts.Like notifications, inbox messages, profile. Some discussing get very personal sometimes and would be pretty good.Range of the members, like in the older version. "enthusiast",etc.
2)Maybe it's not a bad idea to keep slower laptimes. To compare the cars fairly by independend test, factory claim or factory test.
3)Would be cool to have a section with the race cars laptimes,or not street legal (FXX, ZONDA R, APOLLO R,ETC).
4)Separete cars cars by the power weight ratio and can compare them fairly.
Add race car lap times would be take a long, but there a lot of members of confidence that could add the lap times, the cars, etc.
The highest range members can add lap times and cars without a adm confirmation.
5) Because the new members would not be able to add cars, lap times, etc. We can have a section of suggestions.
Best of lucks with the V2!
