Ford claim blistering new Nürburgring lap record for Mustang GTD 68

Cover for Ford claim blistering new Nürburgring lap record for Mustang GTD

6:40.835 for the full length of Nürburgring Nordschleife - Ford surprised me today with yet another Nürburgring lap record for the most "apex predator" Mustang of all - the GTD Competition.

If you haven't heard of "GTD Competition", you are not alone - neither had I before one of the commenters mentioned it in the GTD page. For some mysterious reason Ford seem to be super keen to turn front-engine Mustang into high downforce, high precision track weapon, presumably to prove that modern Mustang is more than the V8 roar and acceleration in straight line.

I think they had already proven that beynod doubt, with the regular street-legal GTD recording a full Nürburgring lap in 6 minutes and 52 seconds. This new "Competition" version is not "fully finished", and technically counts as pre-production prototype.

What's more, the tyres do not appear to have any sidewall branding, suggesting racing slicks with no street certification.

Be that as it may, it is obvious that GTD Competition looks like a race car, and not a slow one at that. The aerodynamics are extremely aggressive, even down to aero rim covers and moveable rear wing. Competition is also said to have further power boost, on top of already very impressive 814 PS for regular GTD.

The pre-production status does make it very murky in terms of what actual power this car was running during the lap and what the final version will come with from factory.

Ah yes nowadays we have 1800kg temu hypercars driven by engineers lapping 6:45 and fat mustangs lapping 6:41, both of which were supposedly running on "street tires" lmao, americans... totallly not suspicious

I'm not an American car fan by any regard, but this time set by the GTD Competition is beyond impressive. You have to understand Ford doesn't have anywhere near the amount of development work that Porsche has on the Nurburgring, yet Ford was still somehow able to come on top. Even with the Manthey Racing kit, the GT3 RS a car and aero kit developed on the Nurburgring still wasn't enough to keep up with this absolute monster of a car. And contrary to popular belief these are going to be DOT homologated tires, they are not slicks as many are proclaiming. Time for Porsche to answer back with the turbocharged 992.2 GT3 RS, set for a debut this summer.

I'd take this record seriously if it was run on a street-legal, consumer-available unit. Otherwise, it's just another track-only prototype and probably on the slow end of the spectrum in that class.

My favorite Nürburgring-related internet comments from ignorant Americans:

  • mistaking the place for Nürnberg
  • trying to talk brands into improving on lap records by swapping driver for Misha Charoudin

I don't really get Ford's PR-approach in this regard. Why are they so secretive? Why didn't they wait until all the details are known and the car can be ordered to present this record? This just puts unnecessary shade on an otherwise extremely impressive result.

Personally I don't think this car ran slicks as it just wouldn't make any sense to put a (future) production street car on tires that make a lap time worthless. Also I would be surprised if all the modifications PLUS full racing slicks only brought 12 seconds. I reckon tires alone on a standard GTD could do that. But they upped the power, significantly improved the aero (especially the front-end grip) and apparently also lowered the weight.

Has there ever been a Nurburgring Record without a scandal?

the photographer(Luis Ramirez) on Instagram said he never saw slicks on the car, he also liked this comment. also carbuzz says "could be an edited photo to hide the tread pattern, but whatever the case, Ford told CarBuzz in an email that the time was set on "tires that meet U.S. DOT requirements.""
guess we'll find out soon perhaps

car with pro driver on racing slicks faster than car on road-legal tyres driven by an engineer, how surprising

So the GTD competition here is completely stripped out and using tires "better" than the cup 2R. This would explain a whole lot how the car got so much faster. I think it's a bit disingenuous for Ford to purposely not state what tyres they used, and then saying the their car is the same class as the ZR1X, to imply apples to apples. But it isn't. The Corvette was considered as prototype class because it doesn't meet German emission standards. The GTD here is prototype class because it probably isn't road legal anywhere.

Does anybody know which tyres did ford use? CUP2 R's, Trofeo RS, or slicks

Anyone paying six figures for a Ford should see a doctor.

Definitely not a collectors item, it’s the old pos rustang.

I don't care about non-street-legal car lap records.

It was over 10kph over the back straight, so it must have had like significantly more hp. They obviously stripped out the car. It's cornering speed was literally as fast as the GT3RS Manthey, but with much more power.

So lemme get this straight - they took the already crazy Mustang GTD and made the GTD Competition, an even crazier Mustang.
Wow.
