31 \"The fastest car\" is car with the best

Well, fastest by definition would mean that it passes certain distance in shortest period of time, so the answer appears to be obvious. (I clicked that one)
Oh, but I understand that this poll points towards subjective understandings of term \"fastest\".

To be honest it doesn\'t matter if its a track or top speed. Most people judge on apperances like most people would have a lotus elise over any muscle car

The fastest car in the world is tha car with the fastest top speed(which is the Bugatti Veyron Supersports)this is partly due to the fact that if you type what is the worlds fastest car into a search engine it comes up with the car with the fastest top speed not the fastest lap time or accelertion. SIMPLE!!

Well, like I already said, fast can mean many things.

The most accepted definitions are: to accomplish something in relatively little time (lap times and acceleration) and allowing rapid movement (top speed).

I can tell you from track experience that when people here (in the US) talk about how fast you went, they want to either know your average lap speed or your trap speed in the 1/4. And when they ask how quick you went, they want to know your lap time or your ET.

It could be a cultural difference. Either way, it\'s just a case of semantics. Many words mean several different things to people.

Lap times are great to compare but the number of drivers and weather and track conditions put the compare too risky because can be like a random result, if the driver is good or as good or if its raining or the track is wet or...

Acceleration is for me the greatest way to see if a car is good or not, because its like straight line speed achieved, mistakes are only related to simple things like gear mistakes and tyre pressure, things that most of the guys can make without being excelent drivers or sunday racers.

Top Speed is not actually a good comparation test because can lead to false results. Because most of cars on the street can achieve like 170 kph or 100 mph but most of them can't do that in less than 40 seconds... otherwise other "cars" can make like 300 kph or 190 mph in the same 40 seconds.

The fast car or the fastest is found with the mix of all these three. From order of unmistakable and accuracy:

Acceleration, Top Speed, and Lap Times.

No. Fast or \"quickness\" ultimately refers to time in which a car can move from point A to point B. Since there are no perfectly straight routes in your daily commute or road racing, fastest refers to a car that can achieve fastest lap or stage times.

And I am glad that vast majority agree.

This is pathetic. Fast refers to speed, which is distance/time. FastEST refers to the maximum speed and therefore the top speed of a vehicle. There is no debate...

We all know Porsche\'s are fast in no matter what they do, but there surely not a pure top speed company, if they were, they wouldnt focue on the track performance as much, look at the GT2 and Carrera GT, and as for the fastes car, its not just one attribute, its all of them, your not gonna be a fast laptime maker, if you dont have fast ecceleration.

Georg is right, Porsches have always been remarkably fast. To say otherwise is simply ignorant.

As for drag coefficent (how slippery the car\'s shape is) the current 997 911\'s is only .28
That\'s pretty damn good, far better than the majority of its competitors.

@German dude especially Porsche is a pure topspeed company... many years they focused completely on the 911 aero to make it as slippery through the air than any other car... and it was for many years the only german comapny not limiting the topspeed ..and more important most Germans can´t afford a Porsche ... but they can afford VW Opel Renault Nissan ... hatchbacks and sedan or wagons.. and here the topspeed different bewteen similar models is sometimes pretty big.. so you are wrong not me

who?  10y ago

americans would say that it is acceleration, germans would say top speed, but the good old petrol head would say lap time, the only true measure of how fast a car is i think.

You hit it right on the head.

It is more appropriate to say a lap time is quicker than another lap time, not faster.

Maybe they should change the site to \"Quickestlaps.com\"...hehe

Whether it\'s laptimes, 1/4 mile times, 1/4 mile trap speed, 0-whatever, people will more likely use \"faster\" because it \"sounds\" better even when \"quicker\" is the proper word to use.

Anyway, until 1 car can be the best at everything (top speed, accel, laptime, etc.) the debate will continue. F1 cars get smoked by top fuel dragsters in the 1/4. F1 cars leave everything for dead in laptimes. I know those are extreme examples but after the \"fastest sedan\" mess, I know different people put more weight into different categories.

If there were 2 cars parked in front of my home and someone asked \"Which is faster?\", my instinct would be to answer based on top speed. If someone asked \"Which is more impressive?\", I\'d answer based on laptimes since (to me) laptimes are more impressive than top speed or accel. (dragster vs. F1, for example).

Its all in the peoples personal beliefs and what they want to go for, not one country. being fastest, requires ALL those things listed, your not going to have the fastest lap without fast aceleration.

the race  10y ago

holy shit...if u r talking about contry..i would say in italy for example no one cares for the car acceleration or laptimes...everybody see at top speed...in my country if the car has a v6 or a v8 and is Mercedes-Benz no one cares for specs..its considered fast

User avatar

Fastest can mean anything. THOUGH, It is more accurate to say quickest when referring to lap time or acceleration. Fast is normally associated with velocity, not acceleration.

A road course obviously requires constant acceleration (positive and negative). Your lap time is how quick you completed a lap, and the average speed would be how fast you went.

It is more appropriate to say a lap time is quicker than another lap time, not faster.

So, I would say the fastest car is the one with the highest average lap speed on the majority of tracks. It\'s all meaningless semantics though. ;)

Hello everyone, sorry if my English is bad, I think that the best characteristics of a sports car is lap time at Nurburgring
There are sharp curves, long curves, long straight lines ...
Nordschleife is a measure of properties of a sports car.

The fastest car is what you want to achieve in, if its a drag race, its acceleration, if its a max speed test, its top speed, if your aiming for a the fastest lap, its a lap time, simple as that.
