I have a 1947 Ford coupe with a Pretty sure a L S 6 454 it had stock GM pistons in it domed dealer told me by the part # they were 12:1 c.r and came out of a L S 6 motor. There is no. Number I'd on the block in front of the pass head only in the center of the block behind the water pump and just under the intake. What does this mean ?? It has high performance stamped all over the heads and block.

@ Viking: 1/2 of my coworkers are Mexican, I learned a little bit here and there over the past 5 1/2 years. Yeah, I would like to see what a '70 Chevelle LS6 could do on, say, 18"-20" wheels and low profile performance tires, it would at least handle a little better.

@Shaggy your Spanish is much better than mine, although I did get the gist of Alejandros comment on how much better a Chevelle can do the 1/4 mile with modern tires. I can however say important things in Spanish like: "Me gusto uno cerveza." For English speakers: "I would like a beer." For German speakers: "Ich mochte ein Bier" (sorry I can't put any umlauts over "mochte" with my keyboard). For Icelandic speakers: Get eg fengidh eitt bjor (yeah I know there is an accent missing over "eg" and "bjor", and the "dh" should be a single letter). I am somewhat limited linguistically, but I try. Now about that beer! Yummy. :)

@ Alejandro: No, guey, es mas repido 14 segundas con ruedas viejos, pero es .2 segundas mas rapido solamente. Es 450 potenzas de caballos. Oh, que transmission, este tiempo es con el transmission manual, automatico es poqito mas espacio.

In 1971 General Motors reduced the compression ratio by 2 points on the LS6 454 and lowered the gross horsepower rating to 425, but it also published the SAE net horsepower as 325 in that year. By 1972 SAE net ratings were used by all the manufacturers.

The 13.8 quarter mile is from an original road test, I believe it was Motor Trend. The Chevelle was rear wheel drive. Car Life magazine ran one and only got a 14.6 second quarter mile, but it may have been a hot day or a dusty track condition. The car weighs roughly 4,000 lbs. The factory claimed 450 gross horsepower for the LS6, which really equates to 350 bhp net. Gross horsepower didn't include air cleaner, exhaust, or accessory drives. It was also frequently manipulated up or down by the manufacturer. You can modify the LS6 big block for more power, but stock SAE net is 350 bhp.

I thought all american cars had the FR layout until the 80's. . . Including the Chevelle, also is not the weight 3500 or so lbs (1600kg?

drove them my self alot raced them to , but with a 454 you would run 9.5 in a 1/4 mile strech if the engine was tuned right and it would top out at about 150 - 155 MPH i own one and race it damn good car but i changed my from front wheel to rear wheel drive when i run it on the drag strip you cant keep the nose down even in 3 gear fianly once you hit 4 it slowly starts to come down but by then your just about right at the damn finish line amazing car you can do thing's with and in that car that a person could never believe unless they was in it......

For back then this was quite a car but if they knew what they did today this car would not have weighed 6000lbs.
