Z06 always meant 6 liters, maximum displacement. The C2 Z06, the C5 Z06, and the C8 Z06 all follow through that pattern (many competitions limit displacement to 5.5L in most cars and very rarely up to 8.0L; NASCAR limited displacements to 7.0L). The C2 technically has a 5.3L engine, and the C8 technically has a 5.5L engine (the C5 uses a modified 5.7L), but if they were below the 5100cc capacity they would be called Z05. Z06 also made a return in C6 generation as a 7.0L because it was a bored and stroked 6.0L engine, AND the same 7.0L engine also underpinned the 6.2L engine (including the one in the C7). But the Z06 nameplate made its most honest return to the C8 nameplate since the early C2 era.
Z07 nameplate for track package came up at last minute because of standard Z06 being less competitive by 2011.
I think the C6 Z06 model should have beared the Z07 name from the start, and if supercharged and still slotted below ZR1, be called the ZSC (in the case of C7).
