Last time I checked, yes. I think it was 1992 or 1993 where they started naming their cars differently: 3 digits for the normal models and 2 digits for the AMG.
For example, the 300 CE AMG with a 3.6 liter inline 6 got a name change to E36 AMG, and the 500E simply became the E500/E50 AMG.
I think it was a good decision cause it's easier to tell the AMG versions apart
