Well, considering that Nissan is Renault, and Renault doesn't have the development money to build a Versa or Sentra rival to the GR Yaris/Corolla and the Civic Type R, and the Lancer Evolution just sucked at sales, this is their answer.

Not to mention the Subaru WRX and its STI (and now GT) brothers
