What could it have done if it wasn't a factory effort?

8:02.66 with Sport Auto.
It’s never been the best hatchback on track tbh

I30 N has better tires, I’ll admit tho it’s still pretty impressive. I estimated the Megane RS Trophy to do an 8:01 as the Trophy R did a 7:55 and the Civic Type R did an 8:01 with them. All very close company!

What’s makes it worse is the old GTI TCR did an 8:04.92, I expected a bigger gap between the MK7 TCR and MK8 Clubsport

For real? Yeah I remember that. The Mk7 facelift is just really well balanced, and if you ask me, the only model that is actually better in the Mk8 generation is the Golf R. And I'm saying just the Golf R because that special edition really isn't faster (or in some instances actually slower) than the normal R.

But even the MK7.5 Golf R with the old man Horst von Saurma did an 8:04, only 2 seconds slower then a MK8 Golf R with sport auto, the MK7.5 was great
