This has come a long way. This is one of the first cars I commented on this website. Yes, I was stupid, immature, only a teenager at the time. Chrysler bought out AMC and used the Eagle name, and Jeeps still used AMC engines until 2006.

Formula One cars get ten stars for their acceleration and launch.
The 401 Javelin should have (at least) seven stars for its acceleration. Mosler MT900 (435 hp) gets 6.95 stars, Lamborghini Murcielago (572 hp) and Dodge Viper SRT10 (500 hp) would have 6.9 stars, and the 2000 Saleen S7 (non-turbo) would have 6.8 stars. The problem is - the 401 Javelin has very poor launch due to its high drag coefficient.

I agree, a fine fast AMC Javelin. This "401" engine was available from 1971-1974. In the "Standard Guide to American Muscle Cars, 3rd edition" they refer to only two tests for this car. The first in 1972 with a 0-60 mph in 8.3, and 1/4 mile in 16.1; and the second test in 1973 with 0-60 in 7.7 seconds, and the 1/4 mile in 15.5; unfortunately they don't quote the magazine source so I won't add the acceleration times.
