The tradition of the famous S-, SS-, and SSK-models was continued by Mercedes-Benz with the 500K and the 540K. Contrary to their predecessors, however, these models were no longer racing cars which had been adapted, more or less successfully, to everyday requirements, but comfortable luxury cars instead, with emphasis on a sportive character. Both models were offered in various body cersions at prices between 22.000 and 24.000 Reichsmark. The model 540K could also be had as engine and chassis unit only, and then for a price of 15.000 Reichsmark. Most customers, however, decided in favor of a complete automobile which goes to show the popularity of Mercedes-Benz car-bodies also in the classes of a more ambitious clientele.
