Ford Mustang GT 427 specs

@ Viking : I found some information about this car. It sold by request. It might be the reason why no production number that ever publish. It estimated less than 20 that ever produce by Ford and all of them was a request from client. I still don't know it's true or not.

I find it interesting that the 427 ci option for Mustangs (if actually produced) had the highest "official hp output" from Ford for any of the Mustangs of the sixties to early seventies. Yes I know the 428 Cobra Jet was claimed by various sources at the time as really a 400 plus hp engine, but the Ford quoted output was only 335 hp. The Shelby Mustangs with 428 CJ engines claimed official outputs of 355-360 hp, if I remember correctly. The later 429 cu. in. 385 series big block was rated as no higher than 375 hp.

The "side oiler" 427 cu. in. V8 was also available in full size Fords. It had a dealer wholesale price of $449.53, retail for this option was $622.97. It was rated 390 hp at 5600 rpm and 460 lb/ft torque at 3200 rpm. They phased it out mid year, and replaced it later with the 428 cu. in. engine, just like they supposedly did in Mustangs.

I looked at my sources for the 1968 Mustang and here is what I came up with. According to the book "Standard Guide to American Muscle Cars: A Supercar Source Book 1960-2000" there is the following info: "Many new options were offered in 1968. ... Big-block options included two 'FE' series engines, the 390-cid V-8 (with 320/325 hp) and the 390-hp 427-cid V-8. This engine was used in only a handful of cars before it was phased out in December 1967." This is currently my best source, and they don't give actual numbers either.

@timmm55 that is interesting. No build numbers from Ford for 427 cu. in Mustangs, Torinos, or Cyclones. My sources claim limited production, and I saw the 427 listed as an engine option in the brochures at Crystal Ford in Maryland in 1968. They were available, is it possible no one ordered one? I looked for a road test for a 1968 427 and only found a Car Life magazine test of a Cougar XR-7 with a three speed automatic. I will have to look further into this.

There wasn't a 427 CI Mustang in 1968. No Torino. No Cyclone.
There was however a 427 "W" code Cougar in 1968, the GT-E. The only version of the 427 with hydraulic lifers with 390 HP. Equipped only with the C-6 automatic.

The GT-E switched to the 428CJ later in May or so. It came with Ram Air, some had 4 speeds.

@ Viking : Sadly this model only available in 3 Speed Automatic only. I read a spec of GT500 K.R. in http://www.automobile-catalog.com/ . It introduce in same year like this car and it's the only Mustang that has 428 Cobra Jet with 400 Hp. Some sites said it has 150 mph max speed.

@Super8 you are correct the 427 cu. in. side oiler V8 was previously used in the Shelby Cobra. It was also the engine preferred for NASCAR because its shorter stroke (compared to the 428 CJ) allowed higher rpm. It has less torque than the 428 CJ, and is more expensive to make. This is why Ford replaced it in Mustangs with the 428 Cobra Jet.

@ Viking : Are those engine were apllied in Shelby Cobra before Mustang? For 390 Hp is not bad but i prefer to choose GT500 K.R. than this

The 427 V8 in 1968 model cars was slightly de-tuned from previous versions. This one has hydraulic lifters and 390 hp, previous years had solid lifters and 410 hp with a single 4 barrel carb or 425 hp with two 4 barrel carbs. These earlier 427 V8s were not available in Mustangs.

Introduced in the fall of 1967, the 1968 Mustang was briefly offered with the rare 427 "side oiler" FE block V8. This version of the FE block had a larger bore and shorter stroke than the later 428 Cobra Jet. Less low end torque, more high end horsepower. This has the highest horsepower rating of any of the original Mustangs (1964-1973). It was about this time that Ford started manipulating their horsepower ratings. Mid 1968 they offered the 428 CJ rated 335 hp, but in some applications rated more correctly as 360 hp.
