This is probably the closer competitor to the Boss 302/Z28 302/AAR Cuda than the later 401 AMX model. But either way, I don't think AMC ever produced a direct competitor to those. This 390 might be a Boss 351/Z28 350/383 Cuda rival, with the 401 rivaling whatever 400+ci pony car was out there.

Beautiful cars! Never liked the 71 and newer Javelin's but loved the 69 and 70 Mark Donohue's.
