These cars were produced for the KGB, the secret police service of the Soviet Union. 35 hp per liter isn't a lot, but because of reliability, the engine wasn't equipped with capitalist pig fuel injection. The cars would reach 118 mph, and they were heavy because of special equipment. I personally prefer the GAZ Chaika 13, another car that had a 200 hp V8, but was favored over this car by the KGB because of it wide backseat, a nice place to put "suspicious" "potential enemies of the Soviet Union".

5,530.0 liters? I somehow doubt that.

@Shaggy
The AK-47 was a terrible gun. Couldn't even keep up with the XM16E1. The AKM is where Mother Russia started to get serious about beating the AR-15s.

Just an observation.

Uhm, I was wrong - actually that Bentley is a bit slowlier than Volga, just looked at the 0-60 mph time not 0-100 kph. But still shame on Volga. Though in the communist world no one was bothered about that fact.

@Shaggy
LOL, you compared! USSR just had to build serious weapons to threat "that evil West". Japanese just didn't need that firepower after WW2. Before, they didn't know how.

Funny, the Japanese build great cars and crappy guns, the Russians build great guns and crappy cars, AK47, great gun, Volga, crappy car.

"This is why American are much better in car industry than Soviet."

LOL! Like anyone doubted.

Even it had a V8 which produced almost 200 PS and 412 Nm(which was pretty high) and weighed not so much - 1610 kg, still was damn slow. Comparing to the Bentley Mk VI '46 which produced 125 hp, much less torque and weighed complete 2300 kg was accelerating faster in 0.8 sec, LOL.

Volga was always a barge. And it brakes the same crappy as accelerates.

@ FastestLaps : They come std with l-4 engines , and some few V8 specials , and as you say there are some KGB-editions .

User avatar

FastestLaps  12y ago

Were they all V8s or just some special KGB-edition?

Compare between Vette and a Volga ???
You should compare between vette and E-type jag and Ferrari 250 Lusso in 1962 .

Super8  12y ago

Not American sedan. Their sports cars. Corvette is expensive and could reach 139,7 mph right? Shelby Cobra also do the same even it's half American half UK.

User avatar

Bijan  12y ago

The Italian Exotics were expensive , not American sedans .
On the other hand , there are very few cars built in U.S that hit 140 mph in 1962 .

User avatar

Super8  12y ago

This is why American are much better in car industry than Soviet. In 1962 American already hit 140 mph with their big block cars but Soviet never build a fast car because their communist and don't like expensive cars

What's Russian for "I need a tow truck"?

User avatar

Volga  14y ago

Top speed 170kph according with words of chief designer, oficial top speed was 160kph due bad reliability of engine working on 5000rpm on speed 170kph. Acceleration to 100kph takes 16 sec.

It was a real car specially bild for KGB. More than 600 cars were produced
