1970 was the best year for the 442 arguably. In W-30 form , it was fastest when ordered as a holiday coupe (lightest) and with the 4 spd manual transmission with posi trac rear end. When equipped this way the car could run MID 13 second quarter miles at around 104 miles per hour . Several tests from back then logged times a bit slower with trap speeds a bit lower but remember , they tested with TWO PEOPLE in the car and with those old bias ply tires. With modern rubber OR a sticky surface OR sticky drag slicks back then these were definitely mid to low 13 second cars . Run a 1/4 tank of fuel , good strip conditions with cool air , a fast light driver and these cars were very fast for their time. With mild mods they were 12 second cars easy......stock 0-60 stock was more like 5.5 with traction back then.

I had a 70 442 with 3 speed TH 400, 3.23 and straight through glass packs. The 1/4 mile time was about 14.0 @106mph. It had stock tires and no positraction. Top speed? Speedo was at 0730(way past 120) on the speedo and still climbing and I shut it down. I estimate 150 or a little more for top speed.

1970 old 442 we had two #1my dad bought.at the anahiem convention center auto show off the floor on display for 7000.00 / It was number 8 of the first 50 Hurst w30 442s in 1970. and they made 800 reg w30 442s that year. but only 50 hursts. and I dont know many factory cars they made but in 1980 I bought another one that had been stripped down alomost the back trunk wall cut out between cab behind rear seat back to weld in a roll cage. but the guy ran out of money and sold it to me. before completiing to stalkcar it out. made him guarantee it was in good order other than that took it for a drive after getting paperwork with my mom and the title parked it in front of his house on main in Springville Utah so main paid him 400.00 and went home he had slapped the engine together with an old carb and timing chain set and dropped it back in to sell it it caught on fire vaporlocked through the carb backfired and burst in to flames the fire Dept came and put it out before it totally destroyed the fiberglass hood they were dirving by north bound after a earlier call and saw it smoking and flames coming out the scoops and grill and stopped and drove it through the lake so to speak. I towed it home the next day rebuilt it myself it was # 48 of the first 50 hursts. but made in to a 4 speed I kept it that way with leather intereor I had done floor to headliner an new carpet. I got a set of dart aluminium batten old heads from a friend Bob wideline ran a Corvette funny car in Utah back in late 70s and early 80s called star Lord for 100.00 edlebrock manifold with 750 double pump holley 12.25 comp bored 60 over 590 lift 410 duration roller cam and rockers milled and ported heads stage one nitrous metering block under carb. matched Pistons and rings?ballenced crank and rods titanium valves and sleeves ? milled ported polish pretty much scavenged all the parts from racing enthusiasts in Utah county and it was fast. 12 bolt 456 possie rear end not original. with 150 lbs liquid lead over. the rear end in trunk and ladder bars tripple clutch 4speed Muncie striped out of another 1/4 Miller ran at boniville raceway vertical gate ratchet shifter. n50 ply torque twisters onback and n70s on front raked 4in all around with high jackers air shocks on rear and exhaust cut outs after hooker headers out book tubes in front of rear tires. bypassing exhaust never lost a street race till old judge Peterson made my take the car apart and sell it piece by piece and show him the reciets I am jerry tangerine orange 1970 Hurst 442 bocephus sticker on the left rear bumper and drive it like you stole it on the right I had that one made at the by in 1980 thus I was the person who made it up and coined the phrase.so popular today ! and lick my balls! I'm was fomous for that and street racing. And though I'm not happy about them getting me drunk and rapping me around a telephone pole you may be firmiliar with the band primus and thier no 1 song jerry was a race car driver came out 1990 I believe. but I never drank I threw the parties and a responsible for the state of Utah outlawing kegers back in the middle 80s for walking a bunch of people right in to the middle of the national war games and proceeded throwing a bash .Freeze your invading our perimeter . right your crazy have a beer were all Americans here and pariotic as hell . cant captains and ******* you will all be escorted to the nearest pow camp as prisoners of war and held awaiting extradition to the proper authorities. thus we as youth having our war party had broke the cloak so to speak and that could not be tolerated thus out lawing kegs in Utah from the at time on till even today jerry Nilsson AKA the ghost. hell raiser for ever .! but I've great kids the best my sister is so jellous says it's not fair I was a bad. boy!

The 442 was pretty much the only cool olds.

That's just my opinion. A lot of people like the boxy Cutlass of the 80's I guess...

442s were definitely the coolest Olds. My dad has a friend who used to have a Delta 88 with the 455 Rocket and he used to beat up on everyone. Only car he ever lost to was another friend's Riviera GS with the Super Wildcat engine.

Damn I wish I was born in the 60s.
