33 Audi Nanuk concept - Audi R8 for off-road

Cover for Audi Nanuk concept - Audi R8 for off-road

A mid-engine supercar capable of going off-road? Sounds like an insane idea, but guys in VW Group are serious on making it reality.

Audi has unveiled its "Nanuk" concept at the Frankfurt autoshow. The vehicle resembles ItalDesign Giugaro Parcour concept, previously shown at Geneva. No doubt about that, Audi actually developed Nanuk collaborating with Italian designers.

The Giugaro's concept was impressive - it had a mid-located Lamborghini V10 with 560 PS and Audi all wheel drive, gearbox and other goodies. It seemed like there was no room for further improvements, but Audi's Nanuk beast has its own new trumps.

Audi described its concept as “dynamic sculpture on large wheels that opens a new chapter in the Audi design language”. The car's design is very exotic and spectacular. It does really look like a raised R8, completed with some Giugaro styling elements.

The interior is told to be minimalist but very functional. It includes monitors, instead of side-mirrors, to access the wider view.

Doubtless, the engine is one of the most impressive parts of the concept. It is the new 5.0 Twin Turbocharged Diesel V10. It is good for 544 PS and 1000 Nm, available at 1500 rpm. These numbers are monstrous! In addition, it manages to get an impressive 6.5 liter per 100 km, or 36.2 mpg.

Power is transferred via a 7-speed S-tronic to all the wheels - obviously. The car is equipped with carbon-ceramic brakes, so be sure - this vehicle is still oriented on performance. To assure you on that, Audi claims a top speed of 305 kph and 0-100 time in just 3.8 seconds. That's just 0.3 sec slower than the halo-supercar R8 V10 plus - unbelievable!

The aluminum architecture was constructed to be convenient for any road. Its dimensions are 4.54 m length, 2 m with, 1,34 m height, with a 2.71 meter wheelbase. So the car shoul be usable both in city and the countryside.

The body panels are made of carbon fiber, and curb weight is claimed to be around 1900 kg. To be honest, to me, that sounds rather heavy, because Giugaro's concept already weighed 1550 kg. But still, Nanuk's curb weight is close to the concept Quattro's 1850 kg (which is starring right now at the show), so not bad at all.

But the main question is - will it properly go off-road? My guess is "yes". Nanuk is fitted with the new adaptive air suspension that can adjust the ground clearance up to 70 mm. And it sits on huge 22-inch wheels. At last, in addition to all that, the car is equipped with electric wheel-steering, which allows to turn the rear wheels up to 9 degrees in the opposite direction to the front wheels, and the same with the front wheels. That technology noticeably increases agility and stability of the vehicle.

So basically Audi created a R8 that can conquest any landscape. Never SUVs were as ultimate as the Nanuk. This SUV should be good for either driving along fashionable streets, asphalt tracks or at a true off-road course. The most universal vehicle ever created?

Audi has to put this in production, it has a market... I wish!

Audi Quattro is great old rally AWD car. same as mentioned japanese cars.

If you put rally King which is the Audi Quattro next to those japanese wannabes you are troll, for sure.

Kid, You are projecting things. I may like some cars more than others, but im not hating. I drive Audi As well daily. There is a lot of good Audis out there in history, i love them. Audi Quattro - superb.

I just like rally type of cars, and Audi Quattro is great old rally AWD car. same as mentioned japanese cars.

Sadly, like Ypu said, for about 15 years people stop develop any rally cars like. So those STi/Evo are old already.

And im looking foward what producers from all over the world bring up to the table. And nowadyas trends are bads imo, to make over-hyped, heavy cars - i dot like that type of cars. And there is no matter for me who build it.

If they would make pure R8V10 rally like off-road version - it would be excelent.

And You still acting like You are in some WAR, like You must to bash some cars and promote other. Like some manufacturer war Jap-German WW3. Bash, hate, and empty blind promote other. What wrong with that kind of people? Like You are looking for some war all the time? Like You must to prove that something is better than other. Its almost Nazis -like behavor. And H***er wasnt a good guy.

hay, something is wrong in Your life that You bring the car-factory hate here? I like just all cars in general. I might just not like some ideas of way of build etc, but its have nothing to do with nationality or manufactory.

If You have some needts to hate, some type of cars, do it. Maybe You will feel better. Im not doing such a things, beceause its weird for me to express such a negative feelings when it to come to opinonons about a cars.

I respect Your opinons. But You bring nothing to the topic and You are rude as well. But maybe it have something to do with Your age. I dont know, it just seems little immature. Like You want to destroy something. So negative energy.

You can do shit with subaru/evo shitcars. those japan outdated technology is one of the worst ever.
Even this old 911 is far better thats why it drive so good in the mountains and do not break.

User avatar

Piorun  12y ago

Haha, kid, im not Japanise rally-car biased.
911, R8, GT-R are also very good cars.
Just wanted to show what happend if that kind of car is modifed to offroad.
It can be see on that video that i showed earlier http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Euy_Va39I1M
911 become a very good off-road vehicle after just few suspension modifications.

piorun shut up and go away with yours subaru/evo shitcars. You ****ing troll. You are pathetic.

User avatar

Piorun  12y ago

@muse
Its still just 911 with modifed suspension, and few things that its must to do when someone want to drive on such a terrain.
But other than that? It just 911. And its propably much better an it that big, and heavy Nanuk concept.

It can be done to Subaru/Evo as well, or to any car with good balance, lowe centre of gravity and good AWD system.

muse  12y ago

@down This is a specially modified 911 in rally serial not stock sports car.

User avatar

Piorun  12y ago

Its not anything very special imo, here you got a stock 911 doing offroad with offroad wheels.

LOL; I can't believe someone on this site actually asked what a Porsche 959 is! (facepalm) It's one of the most legendary cars in the world, and, if I'm correct, the first all wheel drive supercar and the first road car to break the 190 MPH barrier, Ferrari built the F40 in response to the Porsche 959.

"...Whats a Porsche 959?..."

Are you serious? :D

User avatar

Luque  12y ago

I remember the Porsche 959, 2.8 liter twin turbo flat 6, 450 horsepower, 5 speed manual transmission, all wheel drive, 197 MPH top speed, yup, the 959 is one car that everyone remembers. ;) .

959 had 6 gears. The first was called a "G" off-road gear to avoid noise homologation problems
