Just like the 0-300 time, that 'ring time was with the SLR engine.

User avatar

wallenieswiftie  7m ago

I can confirm that the 0-300 time is 100% NOT 32.5 seconds (either that was recorded terribly downhill or a mistake in the magazine author's writing or at best, with a laggy speedometer). Trust me when I say this, even a Porsche Carrera GT can't do that without modifications; and that one does it in around 34-38 seconds depending on driver skill and density altitude. That 200-300 gap (32.5-13.7) is barely even far off from an Enzo Ferrari or a McLaren F1, and those are much lighter cars with far more horsepower and far more optimized gearing.

If the SL55 can do 0-200 in 13.7 (which 100% is believable especially as a European-spec car since Euro Kompressors certainly had higher boost pressure ratings and higher octane capability than their US cousins, that's for sure), and sadly the US-spec SL55 only does it around 16.5+/-, then the 0-300 time has to be 13.7/.325 = 42.5 (rounded up to the nearest 0.5). But to make matters even worse, the car is a 5-speed auto luxury barge, so its gearing and dynamics may not even be optimized to reach 300 this quick • if we added a 10-second toll that'll be 52.5 seconds. IT CAN do 0-300 in 42.5 with the right driving skills, but unfortunately, IT IS a hit-or-miss with this one. Most drivers won't even bother turning on the Speedshift mode in this thing, resulting in much slower shift times, so under normal circumstances the 0-200 is around 15.5 (and around 18 for a US-spec SL55). However, the SL55 is very aerodynamic, so I still wouldn't be surprised if the 0-300 time was less than 50 seconds. However, it's not quicker than a C6 Corvette from 0-160 (actually just about equal to one).

Edit: I had jeremyclarkson1 tell me that this example used an SLR McLaren engine. I 100% believe him!

2002 Nardo high speed bowl! Mercedes AMG SL55 "destroyed*" Lamborghini, Porsche, Ferrari AND Aston Martin! Definitely the last two!

https://ibb.co/ZLYNSF3

0-300km/h timings!*

Results km/h
0-100= 4.6
0-200= 13.7
0-300= 32.5> Holy!

Top speed= 325km/h or 202MPH rounded up.

Nothing else to state. She's a destroyer! And she's NOT the quickest or the fastest! SL LOL! Fact!

Also there's lot's of blah blah about this or that or that, I'm not interested. Because Jaguar with the XJ220 or the McLaren F1 either removed catalytic converters or had their revolution limits increased and literally nobody says anything to them.

It's verified period.

Any issues with the timings contact Auto Motor und Sport!

OK, so very little data and next to nothing in Sourcing and citing and quoting plus evidence? Why is it so hard (seemingly) for Mercedes SL models? All this "opionations" and conjecture for nothing? Shaking my head!

This page really isn't needed. In my opinion, it should be merged into the 500-hp version because there is no performance difference. Mercedes admitted to lying about the 476-hp number. This is not the same as McLaren encouraging power upgrades for the MP4-12C, but worse.

I know Europeans don't go by model years, but the 2002 introduction year (equivalent to our 2003 model year) SL55 also came with the same 500hp as the MY2003-2006 SL55, as well as the CL55 AMG and S55 AMG full-size cars. Only the E55 and CLS55 came with 476hp.

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&f=96&t=691751

According to EngimaAMG:

All 2002 on sl55's state 476bhp in owners manual however a suppliment was issued following tuv tests that states 493bhp 516lbft.

User avatar

It was 493hp, right?

User avatar

12.5 Quarter Mile (at least)

User avatar

rxbkrs  16y ago

@ Flimper, if you're refering to the straightline performance, one reason is that that the new one has less torque.

User avatar

ky  16y ago

I have driven both of these cars, the sl55 sounds much better and the front end is noticably lighter. The 55 handles better than the 600. It is a better car overall

1:15.9 --- 123.320 km/h - Mercedes SL 55 AMG (sport auto 04/02)
1:16.5 --- 122.353 km/h - Mercedes SL 55 AMG, 517 hp/2004 kg (sport auto 12/04)

Seems the newer car is slower, maybe because it's heavier?

User avatar

Flimper  16y ago

This car should have 500ps I think. The hockenheim time should be 1.15.9 as well.

Apparently the car was released as having 469hp but Mercedes found the engines actually produced 493hp so upped the figure.

User avatar

ky  16y ago

I have one of these and there is a supplement book with the manual that says it is 500 bhp

User avatar

gt  16y ago

try evotech they can hook you up with 650hp maybe less for your "02 MB sl55"

User avatar

At very high speed weight becomes less of a problem, the real problem is cd. The sl is quite good here. The sl's real advantage is the torque. It has much more than most other cars, and at very high speed this shows through. Does anyone know who can mod this car without causing damage? I see alot of people in tha states are doing this

User avatar

Anonymous  16y ago

He didnt exactly specify which GT3. but if were going to go that route, just put a 525bhp SL63 vs a 435bhp GT3 II, and its still going to be an interesting match to see a 380bhp GT3 vs a 493bhp Sl55, you also have to remember its all in the drivers, not just the cars.

User avatar

FastestLaps  16y ago

Anonymous, I think you have lost this argument. 997 vs SL55 is not a fair comparison to begin with. 997 GT3 was introduced 4 years (!) after SL55.

This guy says he has owned SL55 for 5 years which means those GT3 must have been against 996.

User avatar

gt  16y ago

what are we talking about here?? tuned vs stock??

stock to stock gt3 will win

modded ecu SL 55 AMG vs 996 gt3 200km/h to 300km/h the Mb will win

User avatar

Anonymous  16y ago

Im not talking about a 996 GT3, im talking about the 435bhp 997 911 GT3, that will even beat the SL63, but, a SL55 vs 996 GT3 would be an interesting match nontheless.

User avatar

FastestLaps  16y ago

Take a look at this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PaxspEEMuOY

That's E55 vs 997 GT3 RS. It's not hard to imagine SL55 vs 996 GT3.

GT3 are not dragsters.

User avatar

Anonymous  16y ago

F360 Yes, but not a GT3, GT3 is 1000+lbs Lighter, and has a slightly better Cd, same with the F430, it wont beat them, power isnt everything, and its not nit-picking, its truth!

User avatar

FastestLaps  16y ago

It will beat GT3, Vanquish and F360 no doubt. And 493 hp ~ 500 hp car. Stop nit-picking.

User avatar

Anonymous  16y ago

This has 493bhp, it will not beat a GT3 to 186mph, nor a 430, Vanquish, Maybe. even after is a guess.

User avatar

FastestLaps  16y ago

This is a 500 car stock. Of course it will beat GT3, Vanquish and V8 Ferraris in a high speed street race.

User avatar

robert  16y ago

I removed the limiter in the first year, apart from that it has clean filters,no mods atall. The supercharger pushes 11.5 lds (this equates to 10 litres normally aspirated) The car may be heavy but it is slippery.Alot of cars are quick up to 120 or 130mph but they simply dont have the shear grunt around 150 or more. Believe me the sl does, and in trouncing bucket loads. I suspect 95% of supercar owners don't have the guts to play at very high speeds. The sl has a very high top speed and it is still accelerating very hard at 150mph. There is plenty of evidence to support this all over the net.

User avatar

Anonymous  16y ago

LOL to actually think you beat a GT3,Vanquish ans some Ferrari with this LOL and if you did no, this dont go no 200mph, so if your going to say that claim, say its not stock, then people could actually believe you.

User avatar

robert  16y ago

I have owned an sl55 for five years. The staggering performance only becomes apparent over 120mph.
From here on up to 200mph its torque and not peak horsepwer that matters. The sl wins out here because of the torque curve created by the supercharger. I have thrashed every supercar whose driver has had the guts to take it up in the 120-150's and over. Porsche GT3's, Vanquish s' ferraris, they simply wilt. They fade in the rear view mirror.
