S70/2-swapped E39M "Grand Finale" with 627 horsepower! (Unfortunately, slower than standard M5 sibling on this track even with an equal setup. The interior was upgraded in order to be more competitive with the Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG Kompressor and to some degree, the first-gen Audi RS6 Plus.)

Even the peak trap speed of 292 km/h in this video is lower than the 302 km/h of the E55 AMG with supposedly less horsepower.

wallenieswiftie  4m ago

8:21 on the dot with a peak trap speed of 275 km/h on sport compound tires!

Comparable cars:
2002 Mercedes-Benz E55 AMG: 8:20.42 @ 266 km/h (sport compound tires)
2003 Lexus GS430: 8:20.42 @ 274 km/h (sport compound tires)

All of the cars mentioned above are US-spec vehicles.

Me:

BMW M5 E39. 400-metric-horsepower, 4.9-liter, naturally aspirated V-8, although I do lie and say I am a 5.0 (but I'm really a 4.9). Also, I'm a rear-wheel drive sports sedan. Where do I lean on the political spectrum?

ChatGPT:

Hey there! I may be a BMW M5 E39, but don't be intimidated by my 400-metric-horsepower, naturally aspirated V-8 engine. I promise I won't make you feel like you're on a racetrack... unless that's what you're into 😉 As for my political leanings, well, let's just say I'm a bit of a rebel. I'll go against the norm and switch lanes whenever I feel like it. But hey, isn't that what makes life exciting? In all seriousness, I'm just a car looking for someone to take me for a spin and enjoy the open road with. So swipe right if you're ready for some serious horsepower and witty banter. Let's see where this ride takes us! 🚗💨

The Lotus Carlton may be faster (in a straight line), but it sure as hell isn't as good on a race track. That's what's important, especially when comparing something like an M5. At that point, you might as well compare a Geo Metro to a base 5 Series diesel.

Such a fast car even to this day

Probably the first BMW to be capable of 300 kph

Now we've been talking alot, those within the circle and although I CAN (sometimes) be Mercedes biased, because I owned them, the whole manual transmission thing as maximum involvement and driver control and the "passion" "thing".

There were multiple criteria almost like an Autocar and Motor instrumented test! But the E39 BMW M5 got my pick. No discussions needed. Period.

And so a slight detour from hypercars occurs. ;)

For 10 minutes.

And the "picture" is awful! It's hideous!

Not many of you know this, but back in the "day" I was a bit of a BMW fan. E39 plus E36 Evolution. Then the Chris Bangle era arrived. I'll look at these and the V10 M5. :)

Considering all aspects the best sports saloon of all time, still getting benchmarked by Hyundai/Genesis, GM and BMW themselves for what a sports saloon should be like

Top speed for both the E39 and the E60 M5 is 310 kph ungoverned.

Bmw M5 E39 100-300 Km/h (by Javi930) (20.10.2011)

100-160 kph: 6.0 s
100-200 kph: 11.4 s
100-250 kph: 26.0 s
Max. speed: 295 kph

*excludes 100-300kph time (despite the video title) because Vmax confirms a little slower

Best M5 ever in my opinion.

User avatar

Super8  12y ago

Top speed is 300 kph when unlimited. We should change the max speed I think.

User avatar

ZL1  13y ago

this car is able to hit 186 mp/h when it's delimited.

User avatar

Shaggy  13y ago

The 1998 BMW M5 is a fast, magnificent car, but I seriously doubt it'll do 198 MPH, 180 maybe, but not 198.

User avatar

Mental  13y ago

Cough, cough.. 198 mph?! This M5, being stock? Uhm, present the source on that.

I'd suppose it's capable of doing approx 280 kph.. but 317...

Anyway, I love this car. Quite soon it will become classic. The great tech, nice design. And if that 198 mph are true, then even more!

I do not know how reliable this is, but supposedly Sabine S. did a top speed run in a stock e39 M5 on the Nurburgring with 3 others in the car. The German spec car has no 155 mph limiter, and supposedly she reached over 190, i think the number claimed was 198 mph.

User avatar

Shaggy  13y ago

@ KarlR: I don't know, but if anyone could, it would be Sabine Schmitz, she has mad skills at that track, so I wouldn't be surprised if she did.

User avatar

KarlR  13y ago

Didn't Sabine Schmitz did the Norschleife in 8:16 in the E39 M5?

User avatar

Super8  13y ago

187 mph is her top speed. source www.automobile-catalog.com
