Three Speed Was from General Motors, Turbo-Hydramatic, I've driven over 70.000miles with this transmission, perfect, never let me down. Also used by Rolls-Royce

I don't understand why 3 speed automatics were used in cars. According to the wikipedia the first automatic transmission had 4 speed. The 1968 Mercedes W109 6.3 has 4 speed automatic and it has only 50 Nm less than this and there are 7 years between the year of introduction. If they could make a 4 speed which can handle 503 Nm in 1968 why they couldn't make a 4 speed which can handle 550 Nm in 1975?

@Bnonymous
550 Nm isn't enough?
It only needs better gearbox.

I've seen that the 450 SEL 6.9 was deleted so I re-added it.
