A 250 competition

If you want something slower and more expensive, this is a good option :)
But on a serious note - I don't think A250 was targeted at the Golf GTi buyer. It's just a Mercedes that happens to be a hatchback like Golf and happens to have a powerful engine like Golf. If Golf was an M5, this would be Audi S6.

This is the strongest non-AMG A-Class and it happens to be around the same power as the Golf GTI (230 PS), sadly it was tested against the GTI Performance.
There will be a 35 AMG version with 306 PS, which is around the same power as the Golf R and Audi S3.
And there will be also a 45 AMG version probably around 400 PS, fighting against the RS3 for the title of King of the hot-hatches.

It was tested against the GTI Performance not the regular GTI (230 PS). I don't know why magazines did this.

i believe this car is supposed to be a rival to cars like the BMW 125i, these are just normal hatches with more horsepower, like in between a normal hatch and a hot hatch

Remember when the A-class used to be tiny "microvan" looking compact car in the "German K-car" category with Audi A2 and Opel Meriva?
Over time it has transformed into this big, long, wide premium hatchback, much like Golf 7 is now almost a big luxury car compared to Golf 1, 2, 3.
