61 Alfa Romeo "shuts down" BMW M3 with Giulia QV

Cover for Alfa Romeo "shuts down" BMW M3 with Giulia QV

Move over, Ultimate Driving Machine! Italians are coming to spoil the German performance sedan party.

Everybody wants a piece of performance sedan market. Americans with Cadillac CTS-V and ATS-V, Japanese with Lexus IS-F and, at last, Italians with the brand new Alfa Romeo Giulia QV.

Giulia is a 4-door sedan built to compete in the heated BMW 3-Series / Audi A4 / Mercedes C-Class segment. "Quadrifoglio Verde" (QV) is the high performance trim and direct competitor with BMW M3, AMG C-Class, Audi S4 and Cadillac ATS-V.

The highlight of the QV is 510 ps twin turbo V6, which, according to Alfa Romeo, is designed by engineers with "Ferrari background". This engine is slightly more powerful than the inline-6 of BMW M3, and the Alfa is also lighter than its competition, offers perfect 50 - 50 weight distribution, double clutch transmission and torque vectoring.

Giulia is also not a bad looking sedan, even if it looks a bit like a BMW 3-Series post plastic surgery.

I agree. But this is true for any lap time, on any track.

User avatar

BR2+  10y ago

That seems WAY too fast, I guarantee you NONE of its other laptimes will look anything like that. Problem with Ring times, Is there so many more variables then a normal test, And that reflects badly on alot of cars.

Official Nurburgring laptime: 7'39".

@Iggz: Ask to yourself why so many people around the world love Alfa Romeo. I don't think it's just because it is - or has been - their first car after they've got license...
Alfa has produced some of the most meaning cars in automotive history, so this makes me a proud Alfista, at the same way of many others all around the world.
I've driven many cars before of the Alfa Romeo: Mercedes, Fiat, Audi, BMW, Volvo, Opel... No one of them has given me the same driving pleasure of the Alfa Romeo, and no one of them was so beauty to my eyes at the same way of Alfa Romeo.
I'm a proud Alfista. We are so much all around the world. Never heard about us?

Peace bro.

@Biscione

ok my friend, let's set an example how dissing guys can become friends. I'll answer your questions as it is.

A)No

B)I do have German citizenship upon immigration from ex Soviet Union (Moscow) to Berlin in oct 90 (upon German wallfall). I was Born in Ukraine. I studied in London for 5 years (BA + Masters) and worked in geneva for 7 years for an oil & Petroleum trading Company.

C) No

My first car was a E30 BMW 316i my dad bought me in 1997 for 8000 Deutsch Marks. Next car was an Alfa Romeo 147 diesel (good handling and nice design). Now its very mixed as I have a family to feed. 2001 Grand Cherokee. Qashqai I swapped for my 350z (really regret that, but had to Show some Family commitment) and my wife's Fiat 500 Gucci Edition with that 2 cylinder Turbo engine.

My uncle though is collecting cars but doesnt let me drive any of them including Oldtimers like Yellowbird or limited Newcomer oldtimers like Enzo (in black and in red, don't ask me why please).

Now judge for yourself, but this is the most honest post you see and will ever have seen I assume. So let's put the insults aside and you tell me more why you are obsessing with Alfa ? Because that's your first car after you passed your D license and you wanna see that brand shine. No irony and I'd understand that.

Peace bro.

Iggz

Now some questions for you.

a) Do you work for a german car manufacturer?
b) Are you german?
c) Do you work in the marketing office for a german manufacturer?

User avatar

Iggz  10y ago

Nobody can disagree with you.

However, I think alot of cars today are diluted to to much electronic interference.

User avatar

saxy  10y ago

I think that more competitors means more better cars for the consumer. All in all a great thing

Yes, Looks, Sound, Exterior and interior, How big of a smile the car puts on your face by simply putting your foot down, Yes, Those are are more of a priority then handling. Anybody can make a car handle good with enough money.

Handling has never been important to me, I go to track days every end of the month with my own 2 cars, And have worked on there handling, But not to make it handle better overall, But to make it feel better, Make it give you that smile when putting your foot down and not hitting that apex right.

I have alot of good handling cars in my favorites, And alot the opposite.

And i only judge my clientele by what i personally see, Hence why i said there not ALL like that, Hell one of the 360 owners a few months ago didnt even know what a V12 was...Another 430 owner had to get 4 new clutches in 1 1/2 months because she didnt know how to shift, So i drove for her, By that time she gat a chauffeur. One man thought his 458 had 16 cylinders...Of course those are some of the more extreme cases, But true nonetheless. And also, Im not a client to them, There a client for me, Its not about being loyal, Im no Ferrari loyalist, Its not judging when its a fact, And i have to give them tips. MY clients do drive there cars, Some more then others.

And it is a possibility that the Guilia could be a flop, But i HIGHLY doubt it, Like i said before, 2nd fastest and most powerful Alfa, Newest, I dont think so. But only time will tell.

User avatar

Iggz  10y ago

@BR2+ ok, let me summarize. You favor cars with good handling but don't care about handling. What are your priorities ? Interior ? Color ? Smell ?

Not very loyal and nice to judge your Ferrari clients like that. They don't give any tips ??

Yes, I think that Giulia will most likely be a flop, but hope I can be proved wrong and am looking forward to independent testing - nothing contradictive.

Sorry for you looking at people with deep pockets for more than 20 years buying those expensive Ferrari. And of course handling is not important if you just need to park them, totally agree.

User avatar

BR2+  10y ago

..I dont pick it because of its handling, The CSL is my fav Bmw.....But not for its handling capabilities, Id still be my favorite if it handle like a Z3M, One of my favorite Porsches is a GT3, And one of my fav cars is a ACR, But i dont care about there handling, Handling isnt important to me.

And what? Just because a car isnt a track car means it cant keep up round a track? The 458 was MEANT to be fast around a track, The GT3 is MADE to be fast round a track, Same goal, Different objectives.

Also, I never said once i test drove a GT3, I never said it had razor sharp handling, Your taking that out of context, Again, I said that in GENERAL about handling.

As for Ferrari not being a status brand, They are a status brand, Get over it, That certainly doesnt mean ALL there consumers are like that. My job for the past 20+ years allows me to deal with clients who have deep pockets, And i get to drive many of there own cars, So i know from 20+ years of personal experience what kind of clients Ferrari has, Same with many brands, I deal with different cars on a daily base because thats what my clients drive and i get the privilege to do so, So dont give me that shite.

And again, You are contradicting yourself, First you say the Giulia will be a flop know you say lets wait and see, Yeah total sense

@dddd, well this site claims 9.2 s for 0-200 for 458 Italia. Anyhow, I don't like splitting hairs and fully agree with you.

Who gives a damn if its 9 or 10 secs. Also, don't like these jealousy arguments about Ferrari drivers not knowing how to drive, buying status etc. No matter what brand, either a car rocks like a good old shoe you are part off, or it sukks giving you blisters.

Also to all of you jealous haters out there, stop placing people into boxes...as in .. You like Ferrari , ah Ferrari fanboy, you like Bmw
, ok all clear German fanboy. GTR , cant drive for shit, all automatic etc.. Narrow minded trash like this, judging and placing pips into drawers, go back to your trailer style homes and keep on dreaming..

User avatar

Iggz  10y ago

@BR2+ by Chance saw your comment on the M3 sedan. you made a Statement saying you'd always choose an a CSL over any M3.CSL is claimed by many to be the best handling M3 ever made. Same time you say handling is not important to you .

Dude, something is wrong with you .. seriously , don't mean to insult you.

@Iggz 0-200 km/h in 8,3s is claimed time for Ferrari 488 GTB.

Ferrari 458 Italia is said to do 0-200 km/h in 10,4s and it still is superfast.

I havent driven 458 Italia but i have read many reviews (also owners reviews) and this car is said to have great handling, steering system, feeling etc even for current standards...We have to remember that 458 is 2009 year car.

@Br2+ Have you ever read Ferrarichat ? Look how many users that forum has and i dont agree that very most Ferraris owners dont care about handling.

In my opinion they care about handling.

User avatar

Iggz  10y ago

@BR2+ I can't believe I say this to you, but I surely agree with you in one point. GT3 is a track car (that explains your razorsharp Feeling when you allegedly testdrove it). Now, again there are 2 different groups of cars thrown into one. A stock 458 is NOT a track car and still it is able to compete with a GT3. Handling wise not as sharp but again a 458 is a sportscar, not a TRACK SPORTSCAR setup for track days. For that they should have given you a 458 Speciale to have a fair comparison with the GT3 in Terms of handling. Still, you will be able to kick GT3s asss with a standard 458 (0-200 in 8 secs is not a joke) depending on the track after comfortably cruising downtown.

Your other points on ''Status car'', most people not even knowing Performance figures and ''good handling is not necessary'' is a pile of jealous and silly statements - dissappointing to hear from a car fan.

Should Giulia be as good as M3 sedan, I will get one without hesitation. I really doubt that Alfa themselves had the guts to say they are challenging the actual M3. Only fanatics like Alfa Biscuit there. Many took on the M3 to build a decent handling sports sedan and mostly failed. Takes more than a modern twin Turbo, rear wheel drive and a leaf on the side to do that.. Let's just wait and see for some independent testing.

Yet YOU are the one saying it will be a flop?.............-_-

Ive got no problem with Pirellis statement, But that doesnt make it true.

Your certainly being objective, Realistic? Ill call that questionable. I dont agree with Bisc on the Guilia being a benchmark or out of this world in any way, or breakthrough or whatever, But i certainly dont believe its as farfetched and down or worse than its "German" competitors.
