18 Ferrari one-ups McLaren with 488 GTB

Cover for Ferrari one-ups McLaren with 488 GTB

We are witnessing a dawn of a new era of turbocharged Ferrari. F40 fans - rejoice!

Last year the launch of California T was significant, because it signified the return of forced induction Ferrari.

California T served as a launch platform for a brand new Ferrari v8 engine with two turbochargers and 3.9 liter displacement. In California trim this engine produced 560 horsepower, however, it was rumored that this engine was capable of reliable outputs far north of 600 horsepower.

It was also logical to predict that Ferrari would not use this turbo engine only for one model line, and a modified version of this same turbocharged V8 would appear in Ferraris mid engined 458 Italia replacement.

It seems like this is exactly what has happened with the introduction of Ferrari 488 GTB. In this trim the twin turbo engine will produce 660 metric horsepower, which is 10 more than McLaren 650S.

The 650S is exactly the reason why Ferrari can no longer get by on using atmospheric engines. Matching or exceeding 650S power, emissions and fuel economy with a 458 Italia / Speciale derived or even a brand new naturally aspirated engine would likely be cost prohibitive, if not impossible.

@Inline It is said that Ferrari will keep producing N/A V12 engines but they can be combined with electric engines in order to achieve vast power and superfast throttle response.

It has a 3902 ccm engine. The California T has 3855 ccm. The "original" Maserati engine has 3790 ccm.
I wonder what engine will they use in their bigger modells?

@BR2
The next 911 modells will ALL have turbo engines excluding the GT3.

Wondered why the hell it was called that, I would have called it the Ferrari 487 Primavera, That sounds fkn delicious.

Also im really lovin those rimes, And i dont say that much about Ferari rims, But they are lovely. This thing could have an Enzo/Z28/650S somplex about it.....

So im a bit confused. This new Ferrari 488 will be a 4.8L v8?

It's the displacement in cubic centimeters of each cylinder of the engine. 3902 / 8 = 487,75
Normally this was usde only for V12. 250 GTO, 275GTB and last one was the 456 in 1992.

Im aware of that, But given Ferraris expertise on building a good engine, I think they could definitely do it, But i dont think its the case of them not being able too.

Plus reliable and Ferrari arent usually put into the same sentence, Better today, But not what there known for, Im sure they didnt hit a brick wall at the Speciale.

@V8

Its a 3.8L, I dont really get the name either, (Havent really checked though..

I don't think 700 is possible without changing displacement.

And you know there is a huge difference between a tuner engine and emissions compliant and reliable production engine.

Maximum my arse, If they wanted to they could give it more bhp, Hell Novitec offers 650bhp in there 458, And i think there others who offer 700Bhp+ without forced induction or stroking, COuld be wrong but i think there is a tuner thta does a package for this like that. I dont believe any manufaktur is atthere limit when it comes to how much Bhp they can get, Its all these emmissions and Mpg and wtf else, N/a will make a comeback, Think of this new Forced Induction as just another trend

I hope the road engine is more competitive than Ferrari F1 engine lol

Speciale and LaFerrari is the maximum what they can do with NA engine.
But ferrari never disappoint, they California Turbo engine is already one of the best even if it is they first tray lately.
Expect that 3.9 Will be much better in new 488.
But i will blame China tax system, for cars with bigger engines than 4.0. Ferrari could creat bigger engine but they cannot beceause China is big market. Shame.
They could easyly make a 4.8 turbo engine with over 700hp. Blame taxes.
