The biggest advantage for the Corvette in terms of fuel economy is the gearing. With the standard six speed manual and 3.42 rear axle, the sixth gear 0.50 ratio enabled a cruising rpm of 1400 rpm at 60 mph. Typically I drove at 75 mph (1750 rpm) on long trips. This accounts for the 30 plus highway mileage. The Mustang with 3.73 rear axle and much shorter transmission gearing turns 1950 rpm at 60 mph. Still, I am a little disappointed with 24 mpg on the highway. Fortunately, city mileage seems to not be any worse than the Corvette (mid teens usually).

I would expect it to be the opposite. Modern engines tend to get far better efficiency. And 30 US mpg for 5.7? I believe it can get close to that (must be barely turning over in top gear at highway speeds) but 30 US mpg used to be 4 cylinder territory.

I have owned both of these cars. I had a 2002 Corvette with 6 speed manual. Not a bad car, but it did scrape the air dam on every driveway. Excellent fuel economy for a 350 hp sportscar. The new Mustang GT 5.0 seems quite a bit faster, but the fuel economy sucks. The Corvette could get 30 mpg on a long highway trip, the Mustang gets at best 23-24 mpg. The Mustang\'s shorter gearing (3.73 rear axle ratio) does give much better response without the need to down shift. The steering feel is also better in the Mustang. Braking is about equal. The Corvette (non Z51 suspension) seemed a bit too soft for optimum cornering, the Mustang feels much better controlled when cornering hard.
