Today's F1 cars have not nearly 1200 hp. They actually have around 750 PS. In the 80s when F1 cars had those badass turbo-engines, they were capable to produce much more than 1000 PS in the Qualifying. The Lotus-Renault 98T for example produced over 1300 PS at a boost pressure of 5.5. In the early 2000s F1 cars still produced over 900 PS out of a V10.
Back to IndyCar: I guess they have as much more even more power than a F1 car. I expect 750-800 PS.
I read the most powerfull engine in the Champ Car series was a Honda-V8 from 1997 that produced over 900 PS. Today's Champ Cars only have around 720 PS at 35 psi, 1100 PS would be capable at ca. 50 psi.

"657 horsepower in 1964 = LOL."
Why LOL? 660 hp are even good for today's standard, so no laughable about this.

@ Super8: And the funny thing is, the car is a sleeper, but I'll bet the skeptics stop laughing when the driver starts the engine. with 657 horsepower, it has about the same amount of horsepower a NASCAR Winston cup racer had 15 years ago, and the Galaxy "Cammer" is an extremely rare beast.

@ Shaggy: He was the luckiest person in the world because he got a standard car that not too much different than grandma's car but had Race Breed NASCAR engine under the hood. I noticed the performance and I amazed. It almost same as Galaxie at NASCAR. 0-60 mph reported about 4.3-4.5 sec. While top speed is only 7 mph slower than NASACAR 427 Galaxie about 183 mph. 1/4 mile with close ratio said can be done almost 9 sec with trap speed over 140 mph. Also, even it's very rare and desirable, I did not doubt if there was 4 door sedan that might be fitted with this engine since Dodge also put their racing Hemi on their 4 door Coronet.

Yeah and Ford didn't produce 427 SOHC much for street use because it simply to powerful and expensive to build. So they decide to create 429 BOSS for NASCAR to replace their old 427 FE. I wonder why Chrysler had a much courage to keep 426 Hemi on NASCAR by only reduce the compression.

I don't know off the top of my head how much power the IndyCar series cars have currently. I will have to look that up. I do occasionally watch IndyCar, and Formula 1 as well. My dad and I regularly watch the Rolex Sportscar Series, the American LeMans series, the Continental Tire Sportscar Challange, and of course NASCAR.

Ah yes, the 427 SOHC Cammer. Ford built this to compete against the just introduced "Race Hemi". NASCAR officials were still trying to keep their series a "stock car" race series (requiring the cars to only have parts with factory production numbers). The officials finally realized that the "Race Hemi" with very high compression was not a street engine, and banned it. They immediately banned the Ford 427 SOHC as soon as they learned of it as well. Ford did use the Cammer engine for NHRA drag racing, since the NHRA had much looser rules for some of its "factory hot rod" classes.

@ Shaggy: I just search Barrett-Jackson yesterday and I found this one. It sold almost 1.3 million to unnamed collector. It seems to be this car is very rare and estimated only 3 of them (which is original) ever created and survive. Detail said all of them is dealer installed rated at 616 and 657 hp with hurst style 4 speed manual transmission, bucket seats and fiberglass bumper, hood and trunk. The only way to make a different between the original and tuned is look at the VIN. It said the original car had no engine code rather than 427 R code. The one that sold in Barrett Jackson is painted in red

@Shaggy/Viking
Do you coincidental know how much power IndyCars and/or Champcars have?
Fangio Man 12y ago
@Shaggy
Not even F1 cars had that amount of power in 1964. They had ridiculous 190-230 PS. 8O

@Super8
The only cars I spontaneously remember are Shelby's Cobras, like Super Snake.
