VW Golf Clubsport S collects its second front wheel drive lap record, this time around the 3.7 kilometer Sachsenring circuit.

Sachsenring is proving grounds for German automotive publication Auto Bild Sportscars, where nearly all new performance-oriented cars are measured for straight line speed and track performance.

As you would expect, FastestLaps.com is keeping track of all Sachsenring laptimes ever released by the German publication, and 1:38.0 is the fastest ever for a front wheel drive vehicle.

The closest challenger, Renault RCZ R is 2.4 seconds adrift and far more powerful cars like Aston Martin V12 Vantage S, Porsche 911 Turbo 997 or even Caterham 485 R are slower or barely faster, within a few hundredths of a second.

I am seeing a pattern of humiliating defeats for last gen V12 supercars - remember at Nurburgring, mightly Golf Clubsport S managed to beat Lamborghini Murcielago. 320 horsepower with modern tyres, suspension and transmission can, indeed, go a long way.
