Octane Magazine
From what I remember, the problem with Clarkson's GT was an aftermarket alarm that kept messing up. According to an article he wrote on the TG site, he was getting calls about his car having been stolen, when it was sitting in his garage. I vaguely remember something about the car eventually refusing to start, but I think he said it was after a Ford mechanic worked on it. It wasn't the car he got fed up with; it was Ford's crappy customer service.
Yeah, no idea why Ford limited the GT. Can't be because of stability issues; TT GT's are out there right now doing 250+mph in a standing mile with very few aerodynamic mods. Actually, the only "mod" I've ever seen on one of those standing mile cars is a side mirror delete. GM can claim that with the 'Vette, since I believe they actually create a bit of lift at speed. That's fine for something that's intended to take off, but not for a car. However, in that video of the ZR1 doing 207/208, it looked plenty stable. Stable enough for the driver to be comfortable with taking his eyes off the road to keep looking over at the GPS readout(seriously, you can see him turning his head to look at it about every 2-3 seconds).
I really don't get the point of German limiters. I mean, they're one of the few countries where you can legally exploit the top speed of a sports/supercar, but they're also one of the only countries that limits that top speed. I guess it's just so they can get more money by charging to take the limiter out.
And theres no point in limiting a performance cars, ESPECIALLY cars of this caliber, its rediculous, if it goes 212Mph LET IT GO that fast, if im gonna pay all this money for this car(WHich i would) it better do what it can do) This is one of the Top 10(Maybe 5) best American cars ever.
Chevrolet limiting the ZR1s top speed to 205?(208 being reached) but with its shorter gearing(Or bette) from the ZO6, CD.32 and 638Bhp, Over 215Mph is possible, (As noted by many journalists and magazines) sae with MB cars, 670Bhp Sl65 Black limited to...200Mph?...reallly? they have tyres and everything else, if its one company i can be Very proud of, Its Porsche, Not limiting any of its cars to 155Mph, or any High performance cars, they let them do what they do.
Yo dont give a performance car and not let it be contained.
Although, One company has gotten on my nerves lately...Audi,1st they limited there cars to 155Mph...then, they Quasi-Unmlimit there cars? 174Mph? Wtf? AND for a $3,000 option? you kiddin?..
212 is the speed Ford themselves claimed the GT could do during testing, but they ended up limiting it to 205 for who knows why. Similarly, GM claimed the ZR1 was capable of 210+, but it, too, was limited to 205 once it went on sale(though it's been confirmed to go a couple MPH over that).
It doesn't take long to see that Top Gear is unlike almost any other automotive publication, in that it's all about opinions with them. They don't do independent testing with facts and figures, they just take a manufacturer's word for it and focus on the more subjective qualities. So at the time they "tested" the GT, Clarkson was just quoting Ford.
Ford GT times range from 12.2@123 to 11.2@132 from magazine tests, and even a few getting 10.9 from independent dragsters, 1/4 mile times of course. Not every car with a "Faster" time is a Ringer, a Great driver can be miles ahead of a good one..
Your GPS isn't working right.
(I've seen that time before, I was unable to find a reliable reference though)
It's faster than a Ferrari F430 on most tracks
