You're right, the political spectrum of engines is measured by two specs: 1) liters per cylinder; and 2) horsepower per liter.
A 3.0L 6er with 300hp and a 4.0L 8er with 400hp are equal on the political spectrum. A 6.0L Chevy V8 speaks "old school gender roles, and white male hierarchy"

I'm not saying that this amount of bhp wouldn't be enough for me. But didn't the 2004 model had the exact amount?
@saxy: probably just marketing stuff. There are a lot of people that can't stand certain mercedes models with small engines under the bonett, no matter how much power they produce.
