9 Alpine A110 - the new Porsche Cayman, Alfa 4C and Audi TT rival

Cover for Alpine A110 - the new Porsche Cayman, Alfa 4C and Audi TT rival

Alpine brand is back. With 2017 Alpine A110, Renault have reanimated brand that brought them Word Rally Championship fame in 1970s.

The new car ("Mk II" as I like to call it) has much more in common with classic A110 than just name. Design is remarkably similar yet modern while dimensions are scaled up to meet modern safety regulations. The original Alpine was so small it would be considered a "torture device" by modern standards.

Like predecessor, Mk II is also built with lightness as primary focus. Alpine advertize 1080 kg curb weight, which is less than most super-minis. Just for reference, the old fibreglass Alpine weighed less than 600 kilograms - unthinkable in today's world of auto manufacturing.

Mk II is powered by compact 1.8 liter turbo engine with 252 PS. Power is comparable to Alfa Romeo 4C, yet Alfa is still quite a bit lighter, thanks to carbon fibre construction.

The 4C is underpowered to, it may way 1100kg, But either way you look at it, 240bhp aint shite no matter what car.

And exactly how much is this posed to be?..

@tyler why would it compete with the base model 718 when it is more expensive than the 718 S model?

YAY!
Thanks for the article Fastestlaps.

Considering what Renault have managed with the Mégane RS (400 kg heavier, front drive) This Alpine could be a little beast.

@saxy I'm definitely sure this first model competes more with the base TT, Boxster and Cayman. Definitely sure they will have higher performance trims.

The 4c is lighter, and was competing against the last generation of cars within the 280-335hp range (albeit heavier).

The A110 is competing against 350-400hp Audis and Caymans that can do 0-60 in 4s or less.

How is it underpowered when it has 12 hp more than Alfa 4C?

Don't hate it, But don't love it either, I think it's under powered too, But it is nice to see a Real French rwd performance car

It is exactly like 4C in terms of layout and usability. And it's a nice design. Unmistakably Alpine A110.

Considering it's size and lack of practicality, the only car I can think to compare to is the Alfa 4C. It's more of a toy.
